Bummer. I expected a better cover for Prince of Darkness.

Alice Cooper (Who's face is on the cover) is only in 2 or 3 scenes of the movie.

I'll get the dvd anyway. I've always thought of PRINCE as an effective,well-made horror flick. Opening scene still gives me chills.

damn! They still seem barebones. Thank God for R2 discs.

I sold my They Live on eBay a while back, and I've been missing it ever since.

Can't wait to replace it!

Is it just me or did that cover of They Live hardly change?

Not much at all. My OOP copy here has "They Live" in the bottom of the cover in a different font; the pic is the same.

Hmm....apparently in R2 versions, during the opening credits the aspect ratio is 2.40:1 then After that, it changes to approx. 2.10:1 (ie it is slightly cropped). Awwww crap!!

R1 vs R2

Most feature packed is the French version.

If the cropping is the only issue, 'll take it, thank you very much..[that is, if there aren't French subtitles that you can't bypass...]

Is anyone out of gum yet...?

afaik the French version has no forced subs.

So I guess it boils down to extras vs OAR

I will just buy the R2 versions from XploitedCinema.com . Better box art and more features...Probably for the same price.

Damnit! I have to get a Region Free player. This is bulls*it!

Whoa!! People who hate cropped images preferring extras over OAR?? Now that is strange :hscratch:

That is strange. I prefer OAR and the best a/v quality(the R1 pics do looks better). If it's barebones, that's fine. Extras are secondary.

I was going to get the r2...

... but now, no.

OAR all the way, baby. I'll see if a friend can tape the commentary for me.

best solution:

buy the region 2 dvd.

buy a malata dvd player.

use the XY scaling feature on the malata dvd player to adjust the film to the correct aspect ratio.

I use mine and it looks great.

Well glad they used the original poster for They Live. Just hate the new font, but i can live with it. just sold my Image release for $36 on ebay. Now hopefully the bidder pays up. If not,i'll keep it. If so,i will then get the new version for about the same price i purchased the Image release in 200o for $9,hehe.

I really hate that Prince of Darkness cover though. The original artwork(on the Image release, which sadly i missed) is excellent. Still i will finally be able to see the film in it's OAR..& for a cheap price. So it's a win win situation i think. Have'nt seen this film in years though. Remember it being fairly scary. We'll see if it still holds up. I've always loved the opening credit sequence. Music, the editing really enhancing the atmosphere & creepy in the extreme.

That's what I was thinking. Is it cropped, or isn't it cropped? If it's cropped, no amount of adjustment from your DVD player will add back in the picture that's cropped.

That's the problem I have with the term "Original Aspect Ratio." No, you want the "Original Picture." If all you really wanted was the correct aspect ratio, then just the center of the image, 12 pixels by 5 pixels, would be good enough.

So the R2 is PAL right? I got a region free player that does the conversion to NTSC, but have no R2 dvd's try. This would be my first R2 dvd... Is it available now?

my R2 UK changes into 2.35:1 - not 2.10:1

so it's not cropped from OAR

sounds like I will be getting the new release from these cropping issues.

I guess best thing is to have a “2-disc”. R1 for the OAR and R2 for the commentary. This really sucks! It’s also a similar situation for Zulu.

Yes..couldn't agree more, i'll pick these two releases up as part of the 'John Carpenter: Horror Collection' boxset..i even traded in my copy of 'The Thing' in anticipation for this...incidentally i realise it's not to everyones tastes but i don't think the 'new' cover art is too bad for 'Prince Of Darkness'.

After reading this

http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/film_results_page.php?fid=2234

I'm waiting for the region 1 release. Yeah, the extras are nice but I want to see the whole screen and not part of it cut off.

Class316
08-01-03, 10:21 AM
Well for Prince of Darkness you would want a R2.

I hate Universal. Though arent the movies owned by a differnet company in differnet regions? So maybe they own the rights to the extras too? Anyone know?

I think the covers are cool though. Even PoD.

Where can I find a multi region player though? How much are they and do they have the same capabilities as USA players?

There are lots of good players. Try making a search in the international section.

IMO a good DVD-Rom drive is a great region free players.

1)Plays all formats without any headaches, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, SVCD, etc!!

2)Region Free (some are region free by default, some need firmware patches)

3)On your computer, PAL/NTSC issues don’t exist

4)No RCE issues

The only drawback is you gotta connect the computer to a TV.

Connecting your computer to your tv is pretty easy if you have a GF4/5, Radeon 9X00 because they have S-Video Out on most of them. If you have an HDTV with a DVI input, just use your DVI output from your video card straight to your HDTV.

I currently have a 27" Sony (not HDTV) connected via an S-Video connector, dvds and games look great.

Yea you gotta have the TV and PC in the same place, and for some people that’s an inconvenience.

Sell the OOP's on ebay to make some $$$$ before they get released again.

Two things just occcured to me -

the r2 might have just a lot of overscan.

Also - perhaps this is the preferred ratio for home video. (other examples are Apocalypse Now's, The Recruit's and Austin Powers's modified aspect ratios).

I think it's safe to assume judging by many past posts by gutwrencher that he is first and foremost a film buff and also a serious collector...so i very much doubt he's 'in it for the money'
