POSTED: 10:05 a.m. EDT July 25, 2003
The man responsible for such classic films as "Midnight Cowboy,' 'Marathon Man' and "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," has been taken off life-support at a Palm Springs, Calif., hospital.
John Schlesinger, 77, had a debilitating stroke in December 2000, and his spokeswoman Ronni Chasen said his health has deteriorated significantly in recent weeks.
Starting out in the movie business as an actor, Schlesinger is more noted for such films as 1969's "Midnight Cowboy," the Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight film that earned him a Best Director Oscar.
The film, nominated for seven Oscars, also earned Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay honors.
Schlesinger also earned Best Director Oscar nods for 1971's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and 1965's "Darling."
Among his other filmmaking credits are "The Day of the Locust," "The Falcon and the Snowman," "The Believers" and "Cold Comfort Farm."
His last film was 2000's "The Next Best Thing," which starred Madonna and Rupert Everett.
According to The Associated Press, Schlesinger has resided in Palm Springs for the past 30 years with his companion of 30 years, photographer Michael Childers.
