Do you give your console the royal treatment?
I've heard a lot of horror stories about consoles breaking down and such. Since i've never had to deal with anything like that i feel somewhat lucky; but then again, i realized that most people really don't properly care for their systems. I clean all my systems about once a month, and i always make sure they're in a well ventilated area.

Not really. I don't beat them up either. Just some common sense things. Like use a well padded carrying case when transporting, don't step on them, don't pour milk on them. Of course there are console specific precautions.
For the XBox: Lift with your legs not with your back
PS2: Even though it says you can, DO NOT play DVD's in the PS2
Cube: As much as it looks like it, it is not a purse/man bag. Stuffing keys in it will damage it.
GBASP: Do not flip open every five minutes and say "Kirk to Scotty..."
I've really only had one console break on me, the SNES after many many hours of play time. I just sent it to Nintendo and they repaired it. I think it was only $25.

I play dvds in my PS2 all the time. In fact, it's running right now. What's the problem? i don't see how it's any different from dvd formatted games.

I think he means that playing dvds is bad because you are not using the ps2 for gaming but still using the laser lens. it is a well known fact that the ps2 laser lens is crappy quality and needs to be cleaned every year or so otherwise it stops reading discs. so the more you use the ps2 for dvd playing, the more you need to open up the ps2 and clean the lens - or if you don't know about cleaning the lens to fix this problem, you end up with a broken ps2 so to speak.

I pamper my consoles by sending them to a day spa for a facial and massage about once a month. But learn from my mistake: don't opt for the "mud bath"!

I don't get it. All it does is sit in the entertainment center and spin little discs. What is this "care" and "rough handling".
It's not like I use them to tenderize meat (Although the xbox would make some really flat filets)

I just make sure the vents aren't blocked. I can't recall ever cleaning any of my systems, other than the NES which sucked in dust and required cleaning after a while to work, and I've never had a system break on me.

That is one thing that I have always liked about the cartridge format is that there are no moving parts. Whenever I put games in I keep thinking about CD players crapping out on me in the past.
