I wonder if they are going to add any more Div. 1-AA teams. I love the game but the usual African American Colleges and the Ivy League Schools don't add much variety. Are there any other new advancements?

I believe there are 20 more D1-AA teams. IGN had a good preview detailing all the improvements, of which there are many.

NCAA I will definitely be picking up. Over the last few years the NCAA games have become the football game I play the most, even more than Madden or the NFL2K series. I love the depth, the gameplay, plus Online play this year!

Not while the 2004 version is coming out... although if you both

then I'd suggest the 2003 version.

NCAA is the only game I've ever played consistently 9 or more months after it comes out. i enjoy it more than Madden simply because so many teams run such varied offenses. Playing as Florida is just an entirely different experience than playing as Nebraska, for example. You don't get that kind of variance between the teams in Madden.

If you have a sharkport (or whatever it's called now), you can download a roster file with all the names.
That's a lot of typing with the controller so I think it's worth the price of the required hardware.

Well, the new version will have online play. I think the engine is also based on Madden 2003, while the previous version was based on Madden 2002. And though I haven't bought a Madden game in a while, I think 2003 was a significant upgrade...
Anyway, I'm satisfied with the cheap NCAA 2003 I got for my Gamecube. Even though the new one will have USC on the cover (at least, the promo I saw had Carson Palmer), and that 10 dollar gift card is tempting.

I didn't think about that. I wouldn't be surprised if this version did support the keyboard.
I still think the Sharkport is worth it though. If blacklover over on the maddenmania boards is putting together another roster file this year, it should be worth it. He gets details correct down to height, weight and equipment (helmet type, face paint, etc).
AFAIK, the Sharkport is only available for the PS2. But Madcatz bought it a while back and changed the name so there might be an XBox version too.

There is the Action Replay for the XBox. It comes with a memory card. You hook it up to your USB port and download whatever content you like. It is about $40 and you can get it at Best Buy, Target, Walmart and pretty much any where else accessories are sold.
It is cooler than the shark port as the XBox does not have to be in the same room.
BTW there is a guy at Maddenmania.com that will send you the upgraded roster or you can send him your memory card and he will get you the roster upgrades. His name is Fairdale Kings.

This week there's a $10 GC at Circuit City. Next week, they're giving away some third party controller with NCAA 2004, but that might just be for PS2.
Target is only giving out a $5 GC this week, but the ad says "low price." I doubt it'll be anything less than $49.99 though.

EB has it in right now -- but only the PS2 version! I was so tempted just to buy it but the thought of endless load times finally brought me to my senses. Apperently they'll have the other versions in tomorrow sometime before noon. I reserved the Xbox version but that in itself causes problems too. I think I might want the Gamecube version instead and I'd still like to take advantage of that CC deal. Got my copy from Best Buy yesterday and immediately jumped online. I used the "Play Now" feature which matched me up with someone using West Virginia. He was optioning all over the place, but my defense was pretty solid. The score was 0-0 going into halftime, but my opponent decided to quit on me. Didn't bother me too much. I chose to finish the game against the computer and ended up winning 15-0. Go Terps!
It seems as if EA has taken notice of Xbox Live and added some features to make playing online more enjoyable (i.e. Play Now = Quickmatch, Messenger = Friends List, and the support of voice chat) which gets a big  from me.

The X-Box sound bug is troubling, especially since that was tied with improved graphics with reasons I was considering buying that version over the PS2 version. I'm already comfortable with the PS2 control scheme, so it looks like I'll just be sticking with it, unless the sound bug is really minor.

I've played the Xbox version for a couple hours (darn work) and did not hear any sound glitches. I'm using the optical out on the Xbox in a 6.1 setup.
The graphics are very nice, very crisp. It would be nice if developers would create higher resolution textures for platforms that support it instead of reusing textures designed for memory challenged platforms.

Mine is going out through the XBOX HD adapter using an optical cable running to a Onkyo 6.1 DD reciever. The sound options in my game are set to Stereo. My sound will sometimes work fine at first, then the stuttering occurs later. It only seems to happen to me after a play when the band will start playing.

I personally think this is the best football game ever made.
And if you have the ability to download the rosters, they even work online, then it makes this game just so incredibly fun as hell I just can't explain it.
If you're not a college football fan, if you have the roster name in game, you will instantly fall in love w/college football.

i said funk it and bought it..used the $5 gift card at best buy, and got it for 45 bucks.
This game is awesome, i love the smoothness of how it plays, i love the new way to sprint, the defense makes plays now..and not to mention the MIC!! To be able to talk to someone while you play just takes this to a whole other level...
Only problem so far is that there is no way of telling who has a MIC and who does not in the lobby rooms, makes it hard to find someone to play with..(maybe if you have a mic, u can post your name here and we can add them to the EA buddy list, mics only)
otherwise, i don't care that i know nothing about college football, if anything, this game might get me into it now..

Is the AI any less cheap than in 2003? Especially with regards to the near every close game miraculous last second touchdowns by the CPU?
I just had a run in with that (for probably the 50th time in the past year), that led to my only Dual Shock no longer functioning and the game disc in 4 pieces. :D

Ah yes. The old "I'm not losing, the computer's cheating" defence. :)
I was just happy when they fixed the bug where the defensive line would intercept every other pass thrown. I really never had a problem with miraculous last second comebacks by the computer in 2003, so it wouldn't be anything I've worried about for the 2004 version....

You know what I mean. The computer completes long bombs to triple covered receivers all the time at the end of close games. You throw to someone triple covered like that and it's intercepted every time.
Conversely, when you have the ball late, and want to kill the clock, your receivers get butter fingers so the computer gets the ball back to do the above.

This has happened to me. I was up 35-7 in the second quarter and I just got the ball back. 1st play: HB runs for 10 yards then fumbles. CPU ball and they score on a 50 yard bomb. Score is now 35-14. I get the ball back and complete a 10 yard pass. MY WR tries to break it outside when he fumbles and the CPU recovers. They throw a long TD pass and just like that it's 35-21. This was all in a span of 1 minute game time.
I still won 49-21 though. :)

Anyone have tips on passing? I will finish a game 3/25 if I try and pass on my own. If I just "coach" on passing plays (let the computer pass for me) I will end up a more respectable 20/25.
What's the secret?

How do you pass right now? One thing that I have yet to get the hang of is keeping watch over all three or four receivers during the play. Usually I pick one receiver before the play, and I wait until he's open, if he ever gets open... not the best way to do things. Also, try learning your players' routes, and time your throw right after the receiver makes his cut.

www.xbox-saves.com has a roster for the Xbox version. You'll need an Action Replay + memory card or a mod chip to use it.

Exactly.
This cheap AI was the reason I switched from Madden to the NFL2K series for the pro-game. Maybe Sega will get their act together and put out a decent college game, or EA will wise up and get rid of the cheap AI.

Well, I gave in and bought this game... I'll probably never see another game with a USC player on the cover. Plus, my new xport/sharkport sweetened the deal... it is amazing to just be able to download the rosters. I had to do the entire USC/UCLA roster by hand last year, and gave up after that.
I've never played Dynasty mode before, mainly because I bought NCAA 2003 for GC for cheap, and it takes a whole memory card. It is sweet. USC killed Auburn in my first game. It still does take a lot of memory, though, even on the PS2... even after moving most of my other saved games to my computer, the dynasty mode, rosters, EA challenge save, profiles, etc took up a huge chunk of my memory card. (that DVD player driver takes up another huge chunk... I wonder why it's so big?)
I'm finding it impossible to get player of the week, even for my own conference. I had my reciever come from nowhere to get Heisman consideration, and he still can't get player of the week for the Pac-10?
The little tutorials they include in there are great for people who don't understand the finer points of playing the game, especially the differences in the college and pro games. I'm not sure if they had it last year, but the explanation of the triple option is great for people used to playing Madden. I also had to laugh at their comment that a lot of players on defense switch to the nearest player and dive, allowing the opponent to dodge all of the defense. I used to do that...
The graphics also seem to be a lot better... or at least the players' uniforms seem a lot shinier. Also, play action has the camera follow the fake, so it's much more convincing.
Haven't tried online yet... I'm not ready to get my butt handed to me quite yet. I do have a headphone, so I'm up for signing up with any list we get over here. I missed the SOCOM one, and my skills were so far behind the curve on that game that I was embarrased to join games...
As for passing: you may already know these tips. But the control you have over where your pass is thrown and how hard it's thrown is crucial to getting completions. If you have a strong reciever that's always leading his man, don't drill it to him on a long pass play, but lob it up way before he gets to his spot (tap the button) so that he can outrun his guy and catch it in stride. Drill the ball when there's a quick curl, or when the reciever is coming in the middle of the field, with people chasing him but no one in front of him (between him and the QB). If you lob it up in that situation, the defense will get a hand on it. Try to identify the safe pass option in every set... the one you can dump it off to if the primary recievers (you should try to keep your eye on at least two recievers downfield) are covered. This is usually the running back or tight end. It's hard to keep an eye on all recievers, so choose a couple (maybe on the same side of the field to make it easier at first) to follow, then if they're covered move to your safety net.

Do you guys know if EA is going to have updated rosters available in their online section like they had for Madden last year? I know that EA can't release updated rosters with player names, but they can change the player ratings and/or depth charts. At this point, there is no "roster" section to be found, but I was hoping that this was only because they wanted to wait for the season to start to finalize things.

Wow. That would be quite an undertaking. Maybe they would add or rerate prominent players, but there are so many more players in NCAA than in Madden, that I don't see them creating a whole different roster... especially because they haven't said anything about it yet. Here's hoping, though...

What console do you use? Because at ps2rosters.com, he keeps tweaking the rosters until after the season begins. At least he did last year.

Have you guys read about the ps2rosters guy at maddenmania.com? It's a weird story.
A couple of years ago, he was stealing blacklover's rosters and posting them as his own. Actually *selling* them as his own. He also seems to have some sort of weird obsession with blacklover. Someone has been playing online as mmblacklover, but it ain't blacklover. It appears to be this Linder guy. It appears he wants to be blacklover. He's been banned from maddenmania and apparently has admitted in the past that he passed blacklover's rosters off as his own. I'm pretty sure his latest rosters are suspected of being blacklover's too (same spelling errors, never releases until after blacklover release, etc).
Anyway, it doesn't matter I suppose, I just hate to see someone making money off of someone else's work.
Not to bring the debate here...
but Linder said that he no longer uses Blacklovers rosters. He said that both of them make changes in the roster that only they know about, so they'll know if someone copies from them (IE: make a certain player left handed instead of right handed, etc.). I don't know. For the life of me, I don't see how these guys can input all the names, plus make subtle changes to players. Amazing. But is there a need for two of them?
For the record, I got Blacklovers one from maddenmania.com... and USC is spot on, at least.

Thanks for the info. I remember reading about it last year, but I wasn't sure what the latest was.
I need to check out the geekrosters file too. I've heard good things about it as well.
I just wish you change rosters in the middle of a dynasty.
Mad_Scientist at maddenmania says someone named 'ps2rosters' challenged him online. After he declined, a couple of minutes later 'mmblacklover' challenged him. I don't know, but it sounds like Linder doesn't have both oars in the water or something.

I'm into season 8 and I've won the last 4 national championships, but the University of Houston hasn't been invited to squat. I don't know if you have to succeed immediatly (I was 12 and 2 the first two seasons, 13 and 1 the third), or what. My goal was to get invited to a better conference to play better teams.

I wasn't sure where to post this, and I didn't want to start a new thread, so I will try this here.
In my dynasty mode for NCAA 2004 on X-Box, my top QB is down w/ an injury. This happened early in the season, and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to put a medical redshirt on someone while the season was on. Both of my QBs are about the same year (the problem w/ UGA's two-headed dragon w/ Shockley and Greene), and I'd like to keep one of them around if he hasn't played any.
So, in short, is this possible? If so, any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

AFAIK you cannot. You can only redshirt a player prior to the start of the nxt season.

I love this game. I recently bumped up the difficulty to All-American (yeah, I suck). It's more frustrating sometimes, but a lot more fun overall. The games are a lot closer.
In my UGA dynasty, I beat Tennessee 39-31 in triple overtime last night. I've never been so thrilled to win a football video game. I went from cursing and resisting the urge to throw the controller to walking around my empty living room pumping my fists in victory. Good thing my wife was asleep, she would've had more fun with this than when I wear my SOCOM headset.
The strange thing is that my 'greatness' score was only a bit over 500. I was expecting something through the roof. :)

Did you get the rosters from PS2rosters.com? If so, how does it look?
The site says the rosters were done on 7/22 with over 200 hours put into it, which might be fishy if it's just one guy doing it considering when the game came out.

That's right after I switched from 'varsity' to 'all american'. I still have to play Auburn again in the SEC Championship game. I beat 'em in the regular season, but it wasn't easy.

There is no medical redshirt in this game. The only redshirting is preseason or if your player doesn't record a single stat throughout the season (even if he's out there on plays).

I play 5 min quaters with my dynasty and simulate the rest of the games. When the computer simulates, does it do it with 15 min. quarters?
Whay I was wondering is during the games I play, there are about 300 yards per team per game.
The other games have something like 300 yards in rushing alone. Or does this mean i suck at the game?

Response (Box Brian R.) - 09/10/2003 11:14 AM
We are aware of an issue with importing draft classes from NCAA 2004 to Madden 2004 on the X-box. There is an error on the disk that makes this operation impossible, and to fix this we are making corrected versions of the game. To obtain a copy of the fixed disk, please do the following:
Send us your name, mailing address, and any additional contact information you wish to provide (phone number, fax, e-mail), along with pages 43 and 44 of your manual. Once we receive this information, we will send you a replacement disk, and you can then successfully import your draft class.
We suggest sending your information to us in the form of a certified letter, as we cannot issue a replacement without that page of your manual. While you are waiting for your replacement copy of Madden 2004 to reach you, you can still continue to keep and play your existing copy, only without the ability to import draft classes.

Check the forums at Maddenmania.com. I can't remember who's doing it, but someone has created a roster file for the Xbox. You can mail them a memory card, but I think there's a product out now that lets you transfer files from your PC to your Xbox (similar to the Sharkport). I haven't been keeping up with it though so I don't know the details.
