Terminator 3 Question about why the machines....

If this is in the main Terminator thread forgive me, I don't have time to search through it right now. Anyway. If Skynet is a program and has spread itself across the internet and Judgement Day happens, why do the machines still want Connor dead? He can't stop Judgement Day from happening obviously all he can do is start a resistance movement. But with the machines technology why can't they destroy the resistance? What is the big deal if Connor survives if Judgement Day happens either way?

Only a handful of people survive judgement day. If they eliminate the survivors of judgement day (the resistance) before judgement day happens, their victory is almost assured.

Well, supposedly Connor will lead the humans to win so thats why the machines want him dead. (How they win is hard to explain if Skynet is software that is able to replicate itself.)

Of course since everything is predestined, it doesn't matter how many attempts are made on Connor, he will survive until his own time. Which makes time-travel redundant.

Connor lead the resistance to victory. The primary machine sites were destroyed or overcome. In the first movie, Kyle Reese says

...it had no choice. The defense grids were smashed. We'd won. Taking out Connor then would make no difference. Skynet had to wipe out his entire existence. We captured the lab complex. Found the time-displacement equipment. The Terminator had already gone through...

Long and short of it -- if they didn't hunt down and kill John Conner, why, there wouldn't be much of a movie left, would there?

Oh wait a second... that's right... there wasn't much of a movie left...

John Conner leads humans to victory. If the machines kill him then machines win.

I'm thinking, since SkyNet is software, why dont they make a virus and hack that virus into skynet which screws skynet up and starts making machines kill each other.

Yes, Yes, I know, what a stupid idea I have .
