Father Ted Season 3 - what's the PQ and extras like?

Hi,

I see the following extras are on the Season 3 Region 1 DVD:

- Fundraising with Father Dougal

- Ted and Dougal Host Comic Relief '97

- Interview with Ardal O'Hanlon

- Interview with Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan

What are these like? In particular, how long are the Comic Relief and Fundraising extras?

What is the PQ like on the episodes too? I've read some horror stories about it being overly compressed?

Thanks

The extras aren't that great; the only one worth much is the interview with the creators. The fundraising thing is basically several clips of O'Hanlon doing promos for PBS stations. They aren't that funny (I thought, at least) and I can't imagine why people would need to watch them more than once. The O'Hanlon interview is from a British TV show, and it's very fluffy, nothing in depth or profound. It's rather short also. The Comic Relief material has O'Hanlon and Morgan in character hosting the segments between acts; it uses various jokes from the series, but again, it doesn't come off as well outside the context of the show.

As for PQ, it looked much the same as the previous two series, but it's been a while since I watched it, so others should chime in on that.

I agree, the best bit is the interviews. The Comic Relief is also funny enough, but it looks like they're trying very hard with dialogue written while they WEREN'T trying. Then again, it's Comic Relief, don't expect much.

PQ was fine to me. It's eight twenty-something minute episodes on one disc, about three hours of video; perhaps the image suffers more on larger sets, I dunno.

An amazon posters had this to say - "I was initially a bit hesitant to buy this DVD after reading the reviews complaining about the re-recording issues. Yes occasionally there are some 'squiggly' bits in a corner, but nothing major at all."

"DVD compression is visible at times. I agree with another reviewer -- the compression of all episodes onto one single disc is leaving drop-outs and "slow-motion" incidents, probably because the full framerate cannot be kept."

"The picture of the DVD is crystal clear and the sound is perfect."

So, since this is probably the best release we'll get... go for it.

Thanks for your replies

The reason I started the thread was because there is a Father Ted boxset here in the UK, but the Reg 1 of Season 3 seemed to have some exclusive extras. So I figured if the extras were great and the PQ okay then I'd buy the seasons separately. It sounds like the extras aren't anything too wonderful though, so I think I'll go with the Reg 2 UK boxset as originally planned and save myself a bit of money
