I just bought my first RPTV, a Toshiba 57H83!

It'll be at my house on Thursday - however...

There are 2 places in my front room where I can put the TV. One is directly in front of a window, one is to the left of the window.

not the best diagram, I know (= equals carpet)

Question is - where would glare and basic viewing be the best place to have it? Probably a stupid question, but has anyone else had the same dilemma?

It appears that 1 is the best choice. I had a simliar dilemma but I had the fireplace where your window is and the window directly accross from your #1 position. I solved the glare problem by getting a room darkening shade from Penney's. About $400 for a large window it completely darkens the room even on a sunny day yet the light color doesn't make the room look like a tomb. Most of my DVD watching is at night but for Sunday football games and things like that the shade works great.
