$1,725 Scarface on ebay... what the..?

I know it is usually not cool to post ebay listings, but this auction is closed so it should be ok. I was just wondering if anyone could figure out why the hell anyone would bid up this high. Looks fishy to me; take a look and post if you have any good theories.

Well, since the seller is in Malaysia, I'd say there's a pretty good chance that this is a bootleg, and I highly doubt that this guy will pay for the auction.

I thought the same thing, I just cant figure out why 2 fools bid $1700 on this thing. Maybe they thought they were paying in Pesos or something.

I think imp66 was insinuating the bidders purposefully bid astronomical prices to undermine the auction because it is a bootleg.

There is definitely something wacky going on there. The bidding was going like normal until 2 minutes before the auction ended when one guy decided to bid $1700 with the current bid at $16. It looks like he was just fed up with being outbid every 5 minutes or so and thought "no one is going to bid over $1700, so I'll just put that in and be done with it". He only increased the bid to $16.50 at that point, and probably didn't think it would go much higher than that.

But then some other dude comes in and looks like he has the same idea, might as well bid a ton of money, the highest bid can't be too high, right? So he bids something like $5000 (that's just a guess) and eBay brings the price up $25 past the current highest bid, making it $1725.

Thats one explanation, although it would definitely be strange if two stooges with that type of bidding style found the same Scarface auction to bid on.

That makes the most sense. I don't know how much of an impact that would make; these two have their work cut out for them if their mission is to thwart Ebay Scarface boots.

Maybe someone meant to bid $1700, but put the decimal in the wrong place... Ouch. Of course, that wouldn't explain the second guy. Maybe he's just incredibly competitive and won't be outsold by anyone! Not even borderline lunatics who don't know the proper placement of decimals!!

That just made me picture someone on Cribs, proudly flashing their bootleg Scarface to the camera. Perhaps they are even excited about having DTS sound on their edition.

More likely people didn't use the decimal point properly. Kinda funny though, because isn't the seller charged for the auction on a percentage of what it sells at?

I have a sealed copy (non-bootleg).

I would let it go for that.

I hope you are trying to be ironic.

Considering the current quality of the disc, the possibility that this may be a bootleg, and a known better version coming out in a couple of months, $1725 is $1720 too many.

The seller has likely gotten some guy or guys upset with him and he or they are retaliating by bidding his auction up to astronomical numbers. The seller will have to pay the final value fee to eBay on this and get refunded on it in around a month or so when he's eligible to get it credited back. This used to happen to friends of mine often right after they gave a bidder a negative for not paying up on an auction they won.

There's also the possibility of guys trying to bid it up because they know its a bootleg. Either way, an eBay suspension is likely coming for those accounts.

"First you get the Scarface bootleg DVDs. Then you get the money. When you got the money, then you get the power. And high feedback ratings."

This kind of goes along with an idea I had. The studio shouldn't release Scarface, at least not for a few years. And in the meantime, they should come out with a "$carface: Bling Edition" with a diamond-encrusted case that costs $50,000. Every rapper on the planet would have to have at least one. And guys like Snoop Dogg would get a whole shelf so they could show it off on Cribs.

I should be a movie executive.

You would think the seller would waive the shipping cost

To quote PT Barnum...

"There's a sucker born every minute."

I mean, the only person I can see paying $1700 for a DVD is a trust-fund crack baby. And if somebody thinks I'm being mean, well Mr. $1700 probably has plenty of money to keep himself warm at night.

Gotta go with the decimal point theory here... The bid should have been 17.00 and then 17.25... Hey, it happens... See Randy's eBay seller/crayon thread in other.

Yeah, I can see the seller blown out of his mind and thinking he scored.... and the buyer losing his mind when he see's the bill...

I have Scarface on DVD that I never really watch. Should I just sell it on Ebay? How much do you think I would get?
