The Terminator (aka T1). I thought it was the most relentless.

How can you hate Part 1? Part 2 is basically a toned down re-tread with bigger explosions

I loved the first 2, but if I had to choose between the two I'd say T2 is my favorite. I just enjoyed it much more, and I thought that Arnold was excellent. I don't plan on seeing T3 until it comes out on dvd in November, so I can't pass judgement on it until then. From what I hear the ending is a doozy.

Haven't seen 3, but 2 is way over-rated. It's good, but the gun's n roses music just dates the living heck out of it.

Too much in your face.

Too much in your face. And the dated new wave club scene, the cheesy stop motion, and the really bad synthesiser music don't date no.1? -wink- jk but I still prefer 2. 3 was great but nothin can beat 2.

Way Off topic, but...

Is anyone here in Wold Newtonianism? It involves linking unrelated works of fiction to each other by names of characters (ie Philip Marlowe of Raymond Chandler's works is the nephew or something of the narrator of Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness.').

So, applying Wold Newtonianism to Terminator- the way I see it, Skynet started the war, then decided it needed a power supply, so it started 'farming' humans and feeding them a virtual reality program that makes them think they all live in the late 20th Century. Of course, there were survivors that fought back from a base at the earth's core...

And I voted for the first Terminator.

Yeah, I don't understand that. Well, I kinda do. A lot of people saw T2 before T1 and they liked T2 a lot and when they finally saw T1, they couldn't dig Arnold as a bad guy and the somewhat different style.

But 1 is definitely a better movie than 2, in my meaningless opinion.

EXACTLY. Those of us that are a little older and saw the first Terminator movie in the mid-late 80's (I was a bit too young to watch it in the theater) remember how engrossing, vicious, and unstoppable Arnold was as the real terminator, and how fresh and exciting (dare I say genius?) the whole story was. T2 while good for its continuation of the story, was just a super polished explosion of special effects, and marketing genius. I did enjoy T2 as well, however the first Terminator movie set the entire story.

I still like T1 the best. The thing I like the most about T1 is the viscious, uncaring, violent, scary Arnold as the Terminator. It just had a very claustrophobic feel to it unlike the other two.

I think it would be awesome for Arnold to come back in part 4 as the same type of mean badass, since he tells John that he eventually ends up killing him.

T2 is the best
T3 is very very good, but not quite as good as T2
T1 has some really good moments and some real dragging momets. It does look like a B movie at times.

Saw T1 when released in theaters. Nobody at the time expected it to be much of anything. It's my favorite followed by T3 then T2. I was dissapointed in T2 when first seen in theaters. The toned down, comedic Terminator took the edge off the movie. I hated Arnie's corny lines in it. It got better with repeat viewings, but is still just OK.

I liked T1 and T2 for different reasons.

T1 is a better film all-around. The storyline is better, there's a better sense of desperation and dread, yet at the same time gives the viewers more hope, and the action is more visceral.

T2 is more fun to watch. It's a movie you can take your kids to see because the violence has been toned down a lot - it's just 2 robots fighting each other, and one of them never bleeds.

T1 here for me and I also seen it before T2,for me Arnold as a bad guy made the movie imo,not to mention T1 had that early 80s slasher feel to it,it was like watching a slasher flick with guns.

What is it about that movie that makes it better than T1? Better FX is all I can recognize.

T2 is not aging well and the story is just pointless whilst T1 just keeps getting cooler. The story of The Terminator is better than T2. Kyle Reese rocks.

'Bad to the Bone' 15 years ago was actually cool. The 1990s youth rebellion edge to John Connor is very aged, as well... when ATTITUDE became a marketing ploy for chip companies. The "angsty pre teen" haxxors an ATM and riding a motorcyle seals the deal as absolute hollywood schlock. The second one seemed more like an excuse to create the T-1000 character since Cameron now had a much bigger budget and CGI was all the rave at the moment. I mean, if Sarah Connor wasn't in John's life being the positive role model she seemed like at the end of the first movie, then how is it that he becomes such a great military leader? I myself like substance over CGI..

The Terminator is better: The sense of fear is most prominent. So much more raw and hardcore. Incorporating so many different effects, the futuristic battle scenes manage to give the best unmatched mood of complete despair, destruction and lethality, Kyle Reese is far cooler than any lead in T2, the big dark 1980's city setting is far cooler than the white trash LA/outskirts setting from T2, and Arnold as a villain is far cooler than the T-1000.
Even though the T-1000 seems virtually indestructible, and can morph into anyone, he's still not as scary as Arnold in the 1980s. Something about having RPG's, miniguns, and Arnold at hand makes the whole situation less... scary. The original has a few good messages to think about. T2 has "messages" too, but they're so forced and ham-fisted that there's no room left to "think about" them.
T1 is an action movie with horror elements - it's just an unusually intelligent one, while T2 is a typically brainless one.

T3, imo, doesn't exist. It was horrible, and I've deleted it from my memory. As far as I'm concerned, the series ends with 2.

The Terminator, for all the reasons others have stated, especially Arnold as the bad guy. Still, I love the sequence in T2 when Sarah escapes from the mental hospital.

The first two are great. I'd say T2 is a little better.

Could have done without part 3. Not a terrible film I guess, but it doesn't live up to the other two...

I really don't consider T3 to be part of the same story. It is the definition of an exploitive and gratuitous sequel. I just think of it as another action flick.

The first two are both outstanding films.

I like T1 & T2.

My favorite aspect of the two movies is the large contrast in the charcater of Sarah Conner in the films.

In the first movie she is a normal person and even Kyle is a bit freaked that she is the way she is. T2 has her in ultimate bad-ass mode, fearing the day the machines are going to take over and preparing herself along with John for it.

I'm not even worried about T3 because i never saw it and i dont really want to see it.

I would expect a lot of T2 votes from people who are substantially younger than I. That being said, for someone who was old enough to see T1 when it first came out, T1 is by far the stronger, more ground-breaking film.

Yes, it has aged, but so has Alien, and I certainly don't think less of it because of the aging. T2 was a worthy sequel (a better sequel than I would have expected, actually), but it lacks the tension and power and moodiness of the first film. The only area in which it is superior is in its special effects.

The original Terminator is still the best, and just goes to show how the movie public has changed in the last 15 years, and how special effects are loved by many fans over a great story and gripping drama.

I really like T-2, I think it is as good as a sequel can be, but isn't nearly as great as The Terminator. The original has a sense of urgency, great tension, a great story, and doesn't have sell out moments like, "Bad the bone," part in T-2.

I notice this more and more about how the newer generations feel about the original of great movies series: The original Star Wars, The original Terminator, The original Superman, those are all classics, and but they don't have the glamorous special effects that their sequels do, people think they are inferior. Times have changed.....

T1000

I don't think it's inferior at all.

It's my favourite soley because of Robert Patrick.

I don't think of it as a "sell out moment" but more of poking fun at the character.

But 1 is definitely a better movie than 2, in my meaningless opinion.

Yours maybe, but far from meaningless.

The Terminator is a much, much better movie in my opinion as well. It had astounding effects for the time, a bitchin' synthesizer score (ala Carpenter) and ...a killer story. One of the strongest endings I've ever seen. An ending that was shot to HELL by the story in the sequel. (I don't consider the sequel to be part of the same series, preserving my enjoyment of the first one.)

The sequel looks good in places and the scene where Arnold walks out of the elevator in the asylum...well, Linda Hamilton pretty much carried the whole movie. The end of that one, though? My God. You could see the schmarmy cheesiness of Titanic already beginning to fester in Cameron's dying soul.

And if you were able to even finish the 3rd without being impatient, then I recommend Batman and Robin with Arnold. You will thank me. :)

On a side note: Cameron's set to do a live action of one of Alita Battle Angel, one of my top 10 favorite comics of all time. It would be hard to ruin, but I'm worried he's gonna aim low to bring in the big money.

I've gotta go with Terminator 1 just because that was the first one I saw. I love Arnie as the bad terminator. I also really like T2. I remember the first time seeing T2, the big shock in the elevator scene where the Terminator steps out and thinking "Oh crap!"
