1st one's the best.
3's my favorite.

The first one is by far the best of the series, IMO. One of the best horror movies every, in fact.

I haven't actually seen all of them, but of the ones I've seen, the first is obviously the best. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is also a cool concept, though, by the end, the execution left much to be desired.

I have only seen the first three movies, and I don't like them all. But if I have to choose .. I'll go with the first.

I've seen all of them, and everything from 2 onward was just pure camp and I loved them all. My favorite though is the first one--it still is one of the very few movies to actually scare me.

I think 3 edges out 1 by a little, because I always thought the human puppet scene was really gross and inventive.

NOES 2 was just horriable. So many bad actors. Ick.

Part 3 is my favorite, followed by 1, 7 and maybe 5?

First one, hands-down.

The first one, of course is a classic. Past that I'd have to go with New Nightmare, just because of the whole 'breaking down the 4th wall' thing. A keen take on a series that was struggling towards the end.

As many others have said ... 1,3,7 are the best of the series, with 1 being the best because of its orignality and truely scary moments.

I have only seen one. IMHO it was a decent movie, somewhat scary, and Freddy is a true icon of the screen. Did he get overly cheesy in the later movies?

Hey DVD professor could you please calm down with the thread making? We dont need to find out what everyones favortie movie from every movie series ever is. You've got like 10 threads on the first page alone. Calm down. Dvdtalk isnt going anywhere.

I liked 3 the most. Interestingly enough, it's also parodied the most by the simpsons.

pt. 1 because it was totally original and frightening when it first came out.

followed closely by pt. 7 "new nightmare" which is technically the best film/best made film out of the series (except for the dissapointing showdown scene)

I like them all at least a little, but 1, 3, 4, and 7 are probably my favorites. I have to agree with the part about 3 and the human puppet. When I was a little kid that part seriously disturbed me.

Part 1. The others made Freddy way to cheesy.

The original is still my favorite. It still gives me chills when i watch it. Probably because i was 9 when i first saw it and i slept on the floor in my mom's room for a good year after watching it. Probably the first horror film i watched.
I enjoy watching 3&4 as well but the first will always be my favorite.

I borrowed the box set from my brother this past week [got the F vs. J deal at Best Buy]

Before this, I believe the only movie I had seen was part 3. After watching all 7, I thought NEW NIGHTMARE was a great movie and the only one I really cared for.

I hope that they re-release it later on as a 2dvd, so I can get it. And if they re-release part 1 as a 2DVD, maybe I will get that one too.

The first one. Ya know, before Freddy had a quip for every death. But I liked part three a lot too. The rest, nope.

Is Freddy vs Jason a Nightmare movie or a Halloween movie?

Technically it is a continuation of Freddy's Dead and Jason Goes to Hell, but is to be considered separate from the Nightmare and Friday Universes.

Since I bought the DVD box set last week and watched them all, I will give a quick rundown.

ANOES1:
Great, fantastic, superb. It may have lost some of its ability to scare but on sheer moviemaking ability this movie sets the curve for slasher movies. So inventive and ahead of its time.

ANOES2- Freddy's Revenge:
The worst of the worst. Obviously a quick cash in on New Line's part. Freddy no longer goes through dreams, but posesses a kids body and makes him go to a leather bar to pick up his gym teacher :whofart:? While it may seem that this movie has little offer in the arena of horror, its cup runeth over with unintentional comedy. I will never forget the dad suggesting the posessed son should be put on methadone or the scene with the same boy dancing to the cheesiest music ever unpacking his clothes.

ANOES3-The Dream Warriors:
Freddy is so strong from taking souls that he now is almost unstoppable. It is up to the children (now in a mental hospital) of the parents who originially killed Freddy to do battle with him in the dream world (hence the title!) Nancy comes back to help the kids (and almost sex up the head Dr.) the kids display some cool powers in the dream world, but the day is won by the good Dr. by giving Freddy a proper burial per his mommy's instructions. This movie tread the line between scary Freddy and funny Freddy the best, and I feel it is the best movie.

ANOES4-The Dream Master:
The head dream warrior is still worried about Freddy and continues to go back into the dream world to see if he's alive. The most awesome charcter in the series, Kincaid, is drawn into one of her dreams as his dog pisses fire and brings Freddy to life. One by one, the remaining Elm St. kids are killed. Fortunately, Alice (a somewhat nerdy weird girl) absorbs their power and starts to bring her friends into the dream world where Freddy kills them and she absorbs their traits. I heard that this is the highest grossing Freddy flick which confuses me. Not much happens in the movie apart from the kills, and the ending pretty much sucks. But all and all, it's alright.

ANOES5: The Dream Child
The debate between whether a child is truly living before or after birth is finally solved, by Freddy! He uses Alice's unborn child to bring people into dreams and kill them. Not a lot of kills in this one and the third act gets weighed down in religious mumbo-jumbo in an attempt to wrap things up. This movie is more of the same, continuing ANOES4's ability to have movie without true plot. While not terrible, it's pretty boring and you can already see the writing on the wall for Freddy.

Freddy's Dead-The Final Nightmare:
I know a lot of fans are upset with this one, but they shouldn't be, it only has a few problems like: too cartoonish of action, bad cameos, a baffling script, continuity problems (Springwood, OHIO?), and an inability to follow the rules setup in the prior movies. Basically, all the kids in Springwood are dead except one, and Freddy uses him to bring his estranged daughter back to him. New Line knew that Freddy was running out of steam, and decided to get their last grab at cash, while it was till viable.

Wes Craven's A New Nightmare:
Pretty cool, the fourth wall being knocked down. Its nice to see Freddy scaring again, great movie, not much bad to say about it.

None of Them, They All Sucked!

As fantastic as the first is, I think it unfortunately has lost some of its edge. Freddy has become so much of a joke that even when he's presented as dark and menacing, it doesn't quite play that way.

That being said, I'm going with number three. It has the best visuals of them all. The first one had some fantastic ones as well, specifically the goopy stairs and the Freddy car, but I think the third one edges it out with the snake and the puppet and the syringe hand, etc. It also has a host of characters that you care about, for the most part (the punk girl kind of deserved what she got). Also, the return of Nancy gives the film that much more power (I can't remember where I read it, but I remember one DVD review where the critic said he inexplicably teared up when she returned, and it's happened to me too). And while that moment wouldn't have worked without the first one, I still feel the third one is the best.

A New Nightmare is a fantastic idea, and not so tongue in cheek as Scream would be. I agree that the showdown seemed a bit of a letdown, but, then again, most of the endings of the films seemed rather disappointing when compared to the various deaths in the middle of the film.

Still, I have all the films and FvJ on DVD, and there's something I love in each of them.

1 is the scariest
3 is the best combination of scare and camp
7 is probably the next best after that, mostly because the other ones sucked hard.

Somebody asked why 4 is the "highest grosser" in the series. Its because Freddy mania hit when Part 3 opened, and basically Freddy was the in thing at the time.

The first holds up to repeated viewings quite well - still gives me shivers. Like most everyone else above, I agree that three and seven are also decent. I also like the rest as well - but then again - I also like to sit through Friday the 13th and Halloween series.
