Will there even be a South Korea in 2010?

They let PM Chretien speak during Canada's 45 min presentation, that could hurt Canada's chances.

Why don't they ever nominate someplace like Greenland for the Olympics? ;)

Vancouver - sounds like a road trip might be in the works, or maybe a flight out to Seattle to visit my aunt...in 2010. Sweet that's good news!!! Congratulations, Canada, specifically all of you lucky British Colombians!
I would have been surprised to see South Korea get the games, considering Nagano just hosted them five years ago.
Now the Canucks didn't bribe any IOC officials w/ arm caches like the good old folks from Utah, did they? ;)

South Korea were actually leading after the 1st ballot:
South Korea: 51
Canada: 40
Austria: 18
2nd round ballot:
South Korea: 53
Canada: 56
Which means that the overwhelming majority of those who voted for Salzburg in the 1st round voted for Vancouver in the 2nd round.
Everybody expected this to be close between Salzburg and Vancouver. It's surprising that South Korea made such a strong showing.

Of course this pretty much screws Toronto's bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. :)

That is surprising that South Korea actually led after the first round. To me, it's surprising that they even made it out of the first round, instead of Salzburg - I think they would have made an excellent site for the Games - I wonder what happened.
While we are on the topic of the Olympics - how is the preparation going in Greece for next years Summer games?

 It means more live events televised. It also means that the NHL players will probably participate in Olympic hockey for the next 2 Winter Olympics (which probably would not have happened if So Korea or Salzburg had won in 2010).
Not only does it mean Toronto will not win in 2012, it probably also kills NY's chances.

What???
Nagano is in Japan, which is actually a *different country* than South Korea. Didn't Salt Lake City host the Olympics just *one* year ago? Shouldn't you be surprised Vancouver was in the running as well? I mean, those two countries border each other for crying out loud...
Does everyone always think Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, etc. are all the same, even if they are different countries?

I would have been surprised if SK got the games in 2010 since Beijing is hosting in 2008. They rarely go back to the same continent for back to back games (although Europe does host for 2004 and 2006).

Yeah, the 2008/2010, both in Asia argument I can deal with, and actually agree with that point... but the Nagano in 1998 thing really ticked me off...

Hey, anyone want to rent my basement? :D
I'm really surprised that South Korea was even leading after the first ballot.
That's waaaay weird. Maybe the Samsung thing really had teeth.
Most people had South Korea out of the running.
Anyways, it will be a crazy 2010.

I would love to have Toronto get them. Relatively speaking it's a stone's throw for such an event. Drive a few hours, and I'm there (assuming I'm still in Syracuse).

i still think nyc still has a good chance at 2012. who are the other contenders?

2012 is probably one of the most loaded list of contenders in recent memory... New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Moscow, and there will be a few others. Having the 2010 Winter Olympics in North America doesn't kill NY's chances, but it'll be much tougher.

I believe Rio is also a 2012 candidate. South America has never hosted an Olympics.

Will curling still be relegated to the middle of the night?
Curling is a great late night drinking sport. Kinda like America's (sic) Cup.

I hope so because it is the perfect time. My roommate and I usually had CNBC on for the hockey games each night so when hockey ended at around 10:30, on came curling until about 12:30. Then the bets would start flying.

Does everyone always think Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, etc. are all the same, even if they are different countries? I know it is in a *different country*. And yes, I am surprised that Vancouver was in the running for the 2010 games as well - I thought Salzburg would have a great chance at getting the games since Central Europe hasn't hosted a Winter Olympics since '84 in Sarajevo. Another reason that it did not shock me to see Vancouver get the games is because the Winter Games are routinely hosted in Europe and North America, not in Asia. I apologize for not mentioning Beijing, too - I didn't realize I would have to mention every single freaking detail.
The last time I checked, Korea and Japan are right next to each other, but they are separated by the Sea of Japan. Excuse me if they don't physically border each other.

Yeah but Turin, Italy is hosting the 2006 Winter Games. Salzburg had little chance because of that IMO. In fact, I think one reason it did poorly was because the European voters threw their weight behind Vancouver to ensure a better shot of Europe (Paris, London, Madrid, Moscow) getting the 2012 games (since Toronto and NY would have strong bids for 2012).

I knew that Turin was thrown into the Winter mix some time, I couldn't remember when they were hosting or whether or not they were ever awarded the Games for sure or not. So that is why Salzburg didn't get it in 2010 - thank you for clarifying that and not jumping down my throat assuming I didn't know my geography.
