Box Office #s for Full Thottle, etc.

The Friday numbers...

Rank Title Studio #Screens FridayBO PSA OverallBO
1 CHARLIE'S ANGELS 2: FULL THROTTLE SONY 3,459 14,698,000 4,249 14,698,000
2 HULK, THE UNIVERSAL 3,670 5,739,000 1,564 87,483,000
3 FINDING NEMO BUENA VISTA 3,333 4,151,500 1,246 245,074,500
4 28 DAYS LATER FOX SEARCHLIGHT 1,258 3,366,000 2,676 3,366,000
5 BRUCE ALMIGHTY UNIVERSAL 2,645 1,882,000 712 217,020,000
6 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS UNIVERSAL 2,810 1,880,500 669 109,659,500
7 ITALIAN JOB, THE PARAMOUNT 2,021 1,585,000 784 72,860,000
8 RUGRATS GO WILD PARAMOUNT 3,008 1,069,000 355 28,320,000
9 HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE SONY 2,425 895,500 369 25,255,500
10 ALEX & EMMA WARNER BROS. 2,310 889,500 385 9,807,500

Pretty low for the Angels, considering the hype... this may actually open with less than the first film. Plus the dropoffs won't be as kind.

Good news for 28 Days Later. Should pull in over 10 mil this weekend, on only 1258 screens. It should pick up more screens in upcoming weeks.

Hulk dropped huge. I kind of expected this, but not this drastic. It'll probably make a bit over 20 mil... a 2/3 drop. Alex and Emma takes a big nose dive as well.

Another good hold for Nemo. Another 15 mil may be in the cards.

Guess people aren't buying into hype like they used to. While good movies, I think both Matrix Reloaded and Hulk made people more wary of "event" movies.

That's a huge disappointment for the Angels if estimates hold -- I'm no statistician (can't even spell it) but it would seem to indicate under $50 million for the weekend, nowhere near what people were predicting. And Hulk, owch, but after wasting my $5 on a matinee I knew it was going to drop drastically this weekend once word of mouth spread.

The question is: after so much hype, why isn't CA:FT doing better? Could it be not as many people liked the first one as they thought and a lot of the numbers were disappointed people? See Blair Witch Project for an illustration of such a concept.

I wouldn't include Matrix Reloaded into that comment. While Hulk was a let down for most people (even myself and I dislike Ang Lee more now), Matrix Reloaded was more generally praised. Hell, I saw it on IMAX the other night and it was sold out. And every person in my group saw the film at least once before seeing it in IMAX (or like myself who saw it 2 times before seeing it in IMAX).

But I really do think Hulk left a bad taste in many people's mouth. But who knows, maybe people are saving their money for the movies come Wednesday when T3 and Legally Blonde 2 are unleashed?

While this weekend looks like it will be a very low grossing weekend (compared to every other weekend since early May), I expect things to change come Wednesday.

Remember that Saturdays normally outpace Fridays. CA:FT will probably barely break 50M but I don't know what was expected. Hulk is dropping like a rock (as anybody who has seen it could have predicted). Nemo keeps on chugging along and may even end up beating Hulk this weekend (probably not but it is possible).

Wow, I'm sure that Columbia expected at least a $60 million weekend for Charlie's Angels. We shall see...

Glad to see the huge Hulk drop off. While it was somewhat entertaining, it still wasn't a good movie.

But that rule doesn't always apply to openers, especially those with "built-in" audiences (sequels, comic adaptions, etc.). Also, summer negates that principle a bit, because the kids and teens are out of school, and are more likely to catch a movie on Friday.

A few examples of recent opening weekend breakdowns...

2 Fast 2 Furious
Fri $19,664,160
Sat $18,318,000
Sun $12,490,320

Hulk
Fri $24,879,000
Sat $21,539,100
Sun $16,305,000

Goldmember (last year, but the last summer comedy sequel I could think of)
Fri $26,452,000
Sat $25,644,000
Sun $20,974,000

Wow, hulk fell 75% from last friday....yikes. It might have a hard time making it's budget back.

Not really fair to compare matrix reloaded to hulk...Matrix reloaded is going to end up with over 275 million domestic as an R-rated film (and 700+ million worldwide), which is quite good, even if it didn't live up to the expectations that the first weekend set.

Glad to see TMR doing well for an R film. CA:FT is a shame though, as it is pretty much the poster boy for movies that need a huge opening because they will drop like rocks the second weekend, and the studio knows it.
You can almost bet Colombia execs are wondering what went wrong and already working on the marketing for Spider-Man 2 next summer after this disappointment.

Don't you just love passing judgment after one day's release!?!

Not really a fair comparison, since a lot of Blair Witch's totals were attributed to word-of-mouth. That and the Internet fiction were what made it such a hit. Even people who loved BWP (as 'uncool' as that is to admit now) weren't really interested in a sequel, especially one of the kind that they did (which wasn't really a sequel, but rather another kind of fiction).

I'll tell ya, Charlies Angels was EVERYWHERE these last couple days, you couldn't miss it. I was guessing $70 million or so based just off that.

I guess the general public was smart enough to pass on this one...

Not surprising, since our theater has it down to one showtime a day. Worse still, it's a 9:45 pm slot, so whatever audience it might have had in the tween girls is lost. I think they're contractually bound to hold things for two weeks, and this is just their way of shuttling it out of the way. I wonder if other theaters are doing this as well.

CHARLIE'S ANGELS 2 is an awful movie.
Here' one example where the preview is 3 stars and the movie is 1 star.

What were you expecting? It's exactly like the first one, just turned up a notch. I happen to look at it for what it is, mindless summer enjoyment.

Same could be said for Hulk, and judging from it's box office cliff-jump it's obvious where the one star movie really is.

Wow, thats a huge surprise to me. I honestly thought that the movie would bring in at least 50 because of the hype, press, and success of the first film, plus awesome trailers and tv spots. Now a 40 estimate seems more likely. I wonder if this is a sign of things to come, with furthur big budget sequels coming up like T3 and Bad Boys 2.

I saw Charlie's Angels last night (not my decision). You really need to turn your brain off for that one.

It doesn't surprise me....not because I dislike the movie (which I did, but that's beside the point) but because when I went to see the movie last night, the place was less than 25% full.

When I attended the Hulk at the exact same time last weekend, not only was the place sold out, but every show of the evening had been sold out.

I honestly thought it would have done better, but the populace occasionally throws you for a loop....not often, but occasionally.

Estimates:

1 Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle $38,000,000 / $38,000,000
2 The Hulk $18,425,000 / $100,171,000
3 Finding Nemo $13,886,000 / $253,910,000
4 28 Days Later $9,730,000 / $9,730,000
5 Bruce Almighty $6,190,000 / $221,330,000
6 Fast 2 Furious $5,676,000 / $113,446,000
7 The Italian Job $5,400,000 / $76,950,000
8 Rugrats Go Wild $3,500,000 / $30,840,000
9 Hollywood Homicide $3,000,000 / $27,300,000
10 Alex and Emma $2,655,000 / $11,572,000
11 The Matrix Reloaded $2,500,000 / $268,900,000
12 Daddy Day Care $2,300,000 / $97,800,000

Not many people went to the theaters this weekend. Perhaps
a lot of anticipation for the 4th of July weekend?

The Hulk looks like it may end up breaking even domestically
(it cost $137 to make) and end up with 175/200 million worldwide.

Finding Nemo is creeping up on Matrix Reloaded and should pass
it by next week, and a Mighty Bruce seems to be edging towards
it as well. Matrix 2 falls from the top 10 after 7 weeks.

Pretty bad numbers all around. Charlies Angels 2 has to be a
disappointment. Does this mean Demi Moores come back is a
falure?

Jason

If that number stands then the first Charlie's Angel will have outgrossed the second on opening weekend. The first did over a litle over 40 million for an opening.
