Best On Screen, Gut Wrenching Breakups

I am doing some research on the best on screen break up scenes in movies.

Which ones have had the most impact on you, and as corny as it may sound, tugged at your heart?

Well, I wouldn't call it gut wrenching, but the flashback scenes in Casablanca always got me.

Say Anything.....she breaks up and gives him a pen. I was one of the most real breakups I remember which is what made it gut wrenching for me.

Say Anything is definitely one of the top ones.

I second the nomination for Say Anything. We have all been through that agony, and the actors exactly captured the moment.

"Oh man, your car? Man, dissed in the Malibu. That's your castle, man."

Like everybody else, the first thing that came to mind when I read the title of the thread was Say Anything . I don't think there's anyone on this board that couldn't relate to that moment.

Say Anything
Riding In Cars With Boys ( Barrymore and Zhan split up )
Girl, Interrupted ( Ryder and Leto )
Dark Blue ( Russell and Davidovich )

On television, the most recent bad break up I can think of is Tony and Carmella Soprano ending their marriage on the last episode of The Sopranos.

What Dreams May Come

Not really a break up, but for all that Chris goes thru to find Annie, his little flashback speech to Annie in the garden and his speech while with her in hell to say goodbye got to me.

"I'm sorry for all the things I'll never give you.... Thank you for every kindness, thank you for being someone I was always proud to be with. I apologize for everytime I've ever failed you... especially this one..."

I'd agree with Chasing Amy and Say Anything, and I'd add Ordinary People.

an oldie but a very, very goodie:

Trouble in Paradise (1932)

While not gut-wrenching, it is sad and extremely bittersweet.

Spoiler:
When world class thief Gaston Monescu, torn between two, has to leave his found love heiress Madam Colet, because of their respective lives and in order to protect her. Madam Colet is left alone, with only the memories of the moment left. Especially highlighted of the final scene: once a thief.

I'm going to throw Good Will Hunting in the ring.

Breaking up with someone even when you don't want, even when you know you love them, but feel it's the best thing to do because you're from two different worlds. Excellently portrayed by Damon.

I always liked the one in city of angels (cage, ryan) where Meg Ryan dumps Cage in the library and all the angels start chanting or crying.

It's been years since I've seen it, but I thought that the break up in Age of Innocence (when the Michelle Pfeiffer character doesn't turn around) was pretty gut wrenching in a quiet, repressed sort of way.

The worst downward-spiral relationship I can think of right now is Mira Sorvino and Val Kilmer in "At First Sight"

Yes, yes......It's been awhile since I've seen it, but that's one of my favorite movies. Everytime I see it, I just yearn for her to turn around, I'm pleading for her to turn around....knowing that she's NOT. But I can't help wanting her to each time. Not to mention the end...I'm doing the same thing....GO UP!!!!!!

Bridges of Madison County, when clint's character is in the truck in front of Meryl Streep and her husband and her hand is slowly pulling on the dooor handle and she is just about balling.

Not necessarly a romantic breakup, but the
Spoiler:
near
breakup of John Candy and Steve Martin at the end of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is rather gut-wrenching to me.

I have to add a vote for Chasing Amy
and if we are counting it....What Dreams May Come. That movie is a tough one to watch but I really enjoy it.
