I think when Tom goes nuts, and lets rip with all the feedback the track reminds me so much of the Fly and the edge's playing.

I don't know a lot about plyaing guitar and all the tools that go into it, but when he lets fly it just sounds like Edge.

If you're talking about the guitar solo, I don't think so. There are only so many chords on a guitar so you will hear some familiarity between different bands. It's a damn good solo though

Every guitar player knows there are only 4 chords.

E G C D

Oh, the songs you can play just with those.

I saw him play it live and it was pretty much exactly like the CD. He creates some interesting sounds with his guitar that do sound like a synthisier.

Amazing guitarist and one hell of a show.

Every sound on the Audioslave and Rage records were always authentic, no synth needed. The guy has always been pretty creative with the guitar. Personally I enjoy the more straight forward solos of the first Rage album, but I love all their stuff (and audioslaves and soundgardens lol.)

I have to say I wasn't impressed with their first song("cochise"), but "like a stone" has blown me away. I love it. Great solo.

I'm pretty sure the back of the CD or the liner notes has the same disclaimer that was on all the Rage cds which is somethign to the effect of: "All sounds on this record were made with guitar, bass, drum or vocals."

There are guitar effects (and I can't remember which one specifically) that can shape the guitar tone to sound synth-like.

I thought it was a whammy pedal he was using.

There are a number -- just to name a few, the Roland GR-33, Electro-Harmonix Guitar Micro Synth, and Big Briar's Moogerfoogers.

that's a good way to change it up, as is Am, C(9), and Dsus4 (but not all at once )

Correct. For you guitar players, just set the interval to one octave above the signal. Morello still uses the original Digitech Whammy. They did re-release a VERY good-sounding re-issue a couple of years ago which I own. Some tone purists insist the originas sound better, but I'm not paying those kind of prices just to have one. Edge from U2 breaks out a whammy occasionally, also. Very distinct sound, and very cool!
