Guilty Pleasures: Bread vs The Carpenters
My favorite of the two would have to be Bread over The Carpenters. The sap that flowed from Karen's voice and from brother Richard's music is sometimes too embarrassing (once, Sing came on the radio, and both my wife and I groaned; another time, and this is unrelated, we both groaned when Sammy Davis, Jr's The Candy Man came on. We were embarrassed for him). However, the music and sentiment of Bread (namely, David Gates) can be related to in my own life. Songs like Everything I Own, Lost Without Your Love, and It Don't Matter to Me are great songs, even if the rest are pure sap.

Well, I can't say that I like either one very much, but The Carpenters at least had the good taste (and good sense) to record songs by Lennon/McCartney and Bacharach/David, which puts them in front in my book.

Bread's If is a beautiful song, not at all a "guilty pleasure".

What a funny thread... two weeks ago I forced my wife to listen to both of these groups' greatest hits. I'm not sure what I would think hearing these for the first time, but growing up with it helps make cheesy music better...
...having said that, I was pretty impressed with some of those Carpenters songs. Much more than Bread. I could understand why someone would really hate this music, but they remind me of Abba in being one of those bands that really sounds pretty good way down the road. Karen Carpenter's voice was amazing.
My wife thought Bread was unlistenable, but liked the Carpenters... then she went inside and turned on the Hives.

I don't know if I'd listen to either with people around. I think overall the carpenters are a bit more respectable. or maybe i just grew up with them b/c my mom liked them so much. But i've been listening to Jude's version of Bread's "Everything I Own" lately and I love it. I think i actually like the Jude version better.
