The dvd we all know, according to reviews, is horrible. And I was wondering if it has always looked this bad on other video formats, or if some are better.

I don't believe a widescreen version was released on VHS. And any VHS version you find will probably be 6-7 yrs old and starting to fade. I know nothing about the LD.

Teh transfer is blown out of proportion around here.
It is bad compared to other DVDs, but it's a step above VHS/LD. Maybe not a big step.. but yeah.

I've had the fullscreenn laserdisc which had lousy serround sound and dull color in the print.
The 1st widescreen laserdisc which was very good no complaints.
The boxset widescreen kinda lost a little on the print as far as image goes, but still good.

As Josh says, the LD and DVD use the same transfer. The LD was pretty bad, but the DVD makes it even worse by adding digital artifacts to the mix.
If you were a huge fan of the film and looking to purchase one, I'd definitely recommend the LD over the DVD. But renting just to watch once probably won't matter much.
And, as mentioned, the point is moot. There's a new "Resurection" edition coming soon on DVD that (hopefully) will result in an improved transfer.

The LD was pretty bad indeed. The problem was that Universal did their letterboxed master for the film for an LD release in the early 90s, and when they decided to re-release the film for their Signature Collection LD box set in the late 90s they didn't bother to remaster the video at all. They just re-used the old, dated transfer. Then they slapped on a small handful of perfunctory supplements and had the audacity to charge $125 for it!
Scarface was, by far, the worst LD box set of all time. It sold so poorly that retailers would slash the price in half, then half again until someone actually purchased it. I think I bought mine for $30, which wasn't too painful by laserdisc pricing standards.
Everyone who complains about the crap quality of the Scarface DVD, at least you didn't pay $125 for it!

Scarface is one of those titles that was never done right on any video format (at least in region 1).
