The screenwriter explained the story in a long-ago issue of "Cinefantastique". Lynch found later, -he hates literal explanations of his films,- and gave him a verbal ass-kicking. As I recall, -its been a while since I've seen the film, -the idea sprang from a mental condition either the writer (who's name escapes me) or Lynch heard about called a "brain fugue". Essentially, as a result of the crisis he finds himself in, Bill Pullman's character creates and enters a fantasy world where he sets about to solve his crisis, in this case through Balthazar Getty's surrogate character. After he's put it all together in a way that's at least satisfactory for him, he re-enters the real world...

You want to read a reeeeaaaalllllllyyyy long description of Lost Highway? Here is the write-up that was done in "Wrapped In Plastic" :
Lost Highway 1 (400 KB) (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pjensen/lost_highway1.doc)
Lost Highway 2 (300 KB) (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pjensen/lost_highway2.doc)
I don't know what is more obsessive -- the guy who put this much thought into one movie, or the guy who scanned it all and put it on his webpage (i.e. - me).

David Lynch describes it as a cinematic Moebius Strip.

Hehe, it's amazing that he went so far as to "explain" a film of his like that. :)
