So I'm doing a short film and this will be my first one. I'm doing my auditions this week, but I'm curious about what sort of things I should do for the actors. Besides a release form I will have them sign, what else should I consider? Also, do I need to apporach them differently if they are SAG or AFTRA? Get a waiver or something? This is a no budget project really, so I'm not paying them and it's non union...so I'm wondering what to do from there.
Also, if any of you filmmakers have any other suggestions for a first time filmmaker...through them at me.

Well how about having them read your script or a line from your script?
If they aren't getting paid I don't think you need to worry about unions. it would be a Low/no-pay deal. Best thing to do is just make release forms and tape the auditions on a cam for future reference.
tell them up front the deal and what you plan. If you get them involved they might be more willing to help you get this picture off the ground so that they could get a name for themselves.

If it's "non-union" , then I would think that you couldn't use SAG people. Maybe you should just call up SAG and ask them, they could tell you.

If the SAG/AFTRA merger goes through, it won't really matter. It'll all be one union.
I believe that for SAG actors, it's custom to have a sign in and sign out sheet, with the project listed and all the info on it.

Just out of curiousity, where are you? Are you in New York, Los Angeles, etc...?

I'm located in Los Angeles. I went through my first round of auditions tonight. Went pretty well, I had them do a monologue I found and an excerpt from the script. Most of the people I'm auditioning are non-SAG, but I do have some SAG folk coming and it is possible I might want to use them. Anyway, any other thoughts would be great.
