After seeing the Brian Cox thread, I began to think about actors that are lesser know to the public, yet give consistant and real performances every movie.

Some on my list include:

Chris Cooper (He might be more noticable after that Oscar win, but I've noticed him in every movie he's been in, even a minor role)
Brian Cox
Jake Gyllenhall (and Maggie too!)
William Fichtner
Barry Pepper

I'll think of some more later, but those stand out to me right now.

Bruce Greenwood is an excellent pick.

I'd like to add John C. Reilly's name to this thread.

Ahh, John C. Reilly. That is the one I was thinking of but had no clue of his name. There are a handful of actors like that. I remember him from so and so movie, what was his name? etc.

Carl Weathers :) After watching him in Predator and thinking about his role as Apollo in the Rocky movies, it would have have been nice seeing him as a big star :)

Most of my favorite actors are lesser known.

But one guy who I always dig any role he plays & wish he had larger roles is Cole Hauser.

Sven Ole Thorsen

The king of "thug" roles

He keeps popping up in sooo many movies I watch!

"We who are about to die salute you!"

My girlfriend finds it strange, but I cheer everytime I see him. The last time was in Sum of All Fears.

GO SVEN!

I almost sh#$ when I saw him in that. Jay and Silent Bob built up this whole image of La Fours and then BAM! Sven in a straw hat! I fell off my couch laughing.

Check out
Hey, It's That Guy (http://www.fametracker.com/hey_its_that_guy/), a great resource for the names behind great charater actors.

Yeah, that is where I first noticed him. He was always my favorite in D & C, but have you seen Higher Learning, no signs of Benny in that role.

There are so many great character actors and in fact most of the actors I really like the most these days are character actors. Many have already been mentioned: Keith David, Phillip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Chris Cooper, etc., so I will just mention a couple that haven't.

Males: Dylan Baker, a great actor, especially in Happiness, who unfortunately is cast too often in bad Hollywood films.

Gael Garcia Bernal, stunning in Y Tu Mama Tambien and Amores Perros

Don Cheadle, good in everything I have seen him in with the exception of Mission to Mars, an abomination that taints everyone involved.

Females: There are many great female actresses, but right now only one or two are coming to mind.

Molly Parker, one of the best actresses working.

Monica Belluci, for whom I haven't seen an excess of her work, but she is amazing in Irreversible and also very good in Malena.

Vincent Schiavelli is one of my favorite character actors. I'm not sure why, but I love it when I see that he's in a film.
