Anybody else catch this film yet? I think it's, hands down, the best film I've ever seen on addiction. It's depressing in a wonderful 70's movie way. Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives one of his greatest performances ever. I know I'm gushing like a movie studio lackey, but I really loved this movie. Anyone... out there??? Anyone?

I absolutely loved it. Caught it on a whim with my wife a few weekends ago and we both loved it. Definitely one of my favorite performances by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Right up there with State and Main, which was my previous favorite of his.
I loved how they would use the sound of the ball on the roulette wheel with the music during some of the scene transitions. Didn't pick it up until a ways into the movie and thought it was a very nice touch.
And of course, John Hurt was excellent in this film. I would recommend this to anybody. Go and see it if you get the chance, especially if you are a fan of Hoffman's work.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman may be the greatest actor under the age of 40 in my opinion.
This movie was extremely difficult to watch for me. It made me more uncomfortable than any drug or horror movie. I found myself squirming in my seat as the movie progressed, knowing where it was going yet unable to stop watching.
That feeling one gets when a bet is lost is perfectly portrayed in this movie. I certainly identify, and in my case it's never more than $50. I can't imagine having that kind of addiction to gambling. It's scary.
A good movie overall. An outstanding movie as a portrait of addiction.

I thought it was a very good film, and truly captured the thrill of gambling while making you cringe at the same time. Hoffman was great as usual, and John Hurt's unctuous manager provided some nice levity.

Hoffman doesn't even impress me anymore.....he's just plain
great. This guy always delivers.
A nice little movie on addiction and desperation.
The way John Hurt's face would light when Phil would come
back into the casino was devilish.
Check this movie out if you get a chance.

I saw this today, finally. It's one heck of a movie. PSH is indeed a talented actor, to say the least. As stated above this movie is very effective and tense. It really works on your nerves.
I like how they made it clear that Mahoney (Iceman :) ) wasn't just about winning. He just wanted to stay in the game
Beautiful movie. I'm never stepping into a casino again.

I look forward to picking up the DVD. It was one of the most gut-wrenching films I've seen. Just watching him there at the tables... it was painful.

This is one of the best movies I have seen this year. It really is a must-see. Hoffman shows what an awesome actor he is.
I felt the same way that other posters felt - discomfort. I was in pain almost the entire time the movie was running. I don't have any addictions but I can see how easy it would be to fall under the spell of gambling.
The only thing that bothered me about the film was Minnie Driver's horrible wig. I know the movie was low budget but jeez...I have seen better wigs at the local Wal-Mart.
I was also disappointed in the lack of any extras on the dvd. Since this is based on a true story, I was really eager to see even a 5 minute documentary on the real story & see a picture of the real guy. You get some trailers & that's it.

Just wanted to bump this old thread to recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
At times I got confused by some of the details of the banking/money scams, so I may need to watch it again. But regardless, I loved every minute of it. The movie conveys gambling addiction better than anything I've ever seen. And Hoffman once again proves that he is one of the best actors working today. Like others said, this may be his best performance yet.

If I'm not mistaken, it made Ebert's Top Ten for 2003.

amazing acting. Good film. Crazy stuff. Should be shown along with those drug addiction films to middle schoolers (ok, so i probably don't agree with that, but you see my point). So yeah, PSH IMO is in the top 3 actors out right now. His acting in this film is amazing. I think love liza was a better performance, but wow i haven't seen one bad performance by this guy...can't wait to see all his films.

I thought it was pretty good. PSH gave me a serious case of the creeps in this one.
