hey all,
Just saw the list for Best Buy's ad for next week. They list the new PS2 model for 199. Didn't know it was coming out so soon. Can anyone else confirm? (they've gotta have some kind of notices up at EB or something).

I know I saw a 'PS2 with Netword Adapter' bundle for $199.99 that's supposedly shipping today. However, just to be on the safe side, I would personally go into the store and see for myself if it is really a SCPH-50000 or one of the older model PS2 repackaged with the network adapter. I recently bought the Japanese SCPH-50000 and it works great. Much, much quieter, supports progressive scan, built-in IR port for the remote (but remote is still sold seperately), and you don't have to hold the power button down as long for it to power off. I'll probably shop for a US model once it comes out.

Is there an on/off or standby button on the remote now?

yes. There's also an eject button.

I saw at techbargains.com today that buy.com has it listed. Actually, I think it's the new one. It's $199 and includes the network adaptor. Could be a bundle I suppose.

I wonder if you would ever actually get it from buy.com though. I haven't had much luck with them in the past.

Will the new model be available w/o the adapter?

Eventually, it will probably replace the current model.

I saw a "Network Package" system at Best Buy yesterday. All it was was a SCPH-3001 model with the Network adapter packaged in. The packaging was different (slightly bigger box) but the design for the system was the same.

Is that a box with the PS2 and the regular network adaptor packaged in or is the NA integrated with the PS2?

The Network Adaptor is just included. If it was integrated, there would be no way to insert the HD.

Per Sony: The equivalent model of the SCPH-50000 in the US is SCPH-39001N, so I wouldn't expect to see the SCPH-50000 model number. Also, no current plans to sell the new model w/o the network adapter. That'll be another $20 for those who don't want it, like me (referring to the current $179.99 price).

Well that kind of sucks, I already have a Network adapter, I guess its ebay time for it as soon as I get my hands on the new ps2 with on/off in the remote. :) God I want that feature.

how does the progressive scan work?

that is, don't the games have to support progressive out? or is it only for dvds?

Should be both. But you'll still need decent component or S-Video cables to see the improvement.

Um, don't you need Component Cables to pass a progressive signal?

i'm still a little confused. for a game like motogp2 for the xbox, it says it supports 480p. so i thought that the game itself must be able to support progressive out.

since the ps2 never had progressive out (afaik), did any ps2 games support progressive out?

or will i just get an overall better quality video?

The new progressive feature on the PS2 is for DVD playback. Some games were already progressive scan enabled, and the old PS2 is able to handle this (Tekken 4, for example).

So the old PS2 can handle progressive scan for games, but not DVDs. The new one can handle both.

And yes, you do need component cables (and a progressive scan television) to use this...

Out of curiosity, where did you see this information from? Thanks in advance. :)

when does the new model come out? I thought I had a new one, but I guess I have the SCPH 39001 and not the SCPH 39001N

Looks like they did. I called them again and they verified this time that the new model number, SCPH-39001N, is just for their tracking of how many new bundles are sold. They have no info, or will give any, on when the new model (the one released in Japan) will be released here.

Sorry for the confusion everyone.

I talked with my Sony rep today(I work for the media) and she told me not to expect the new model until mid 3rd quarter. And she also said that they were told the new model would be released as the "Network Bundle". So it looks like Sony flubbed on this one.
