Buy the Panasonic!
I don't have the xp-30, but I do have the RP-82, and if it is anything close, there is no comparison fair enough to any other progressive scan DVD player in the price class. I have used the Kenwood Sovereign 5050 and the Toshiba 4800, but the Panasonic blows them away. Their use of the faroudja chip makes all the difference, I think.
Good luck to you.

Run, don't walk to get this player. I've got an XP-50 and it's worth EVERY PENNY. The RP-82, XP-30/50 are a dying breed of Panny players with fantastic internals (at user friendly prices). They are getting harder to find (XP-50 is virtually non-existent anymore and the RP-82 is already there--except of course on flea-bay). It has a great Faroujda deinterlacer (more than likely it is better than your 2:3 pulldown on your tv, if your tv has it) and there is no chroma bug. If you end up not liking it return it, but I seriously doubt you won't. But don't take my word for it, go to the secrets website and check out the dvd showdown and see what I mean. I wanted DVD-A and that's the reason I got the XP-50 (pretty much the only difference). Best of luck.
