Best metal album of all time?
What metal album would you nominate as the best of all time? And I'm not talking about the nu-metal crap or that "hair metal" stuff either. Just balls out fast metal!
My nomination:
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Add another vote for Slayer's Reign In Blood. The ultimate blend of hardcore and metal... Pure chewing satisfaction since 1986.
In fact, Slayer would probably have 3 or 4 in my personal top 10 metal albums list.... I'm also partial to the early Celtic Frost albums... Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion in particular.
Oh, and Ride The Lightning was Metallica's best album.

Have to agree with Master of Puppets with Reign in Blood as a very close second. Its disappointing that these bands seem to have peaked way back in '86 with their third albums.

I wanna add to my list:
Dissection: Storm Of Lights Bane
Emperor: Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Burzum: Burzum
Dark Throne: Transylvanian Hunger
Dark Throne: Blaze In The Northern Sky
Mayhem: Can't recall the name right now but it was one of Mayhems earliest albums.
All of these are black metal classics. IMO every black metal fan must own these cd's.
Iced Earth: Horror Show
-Personal fav. many say that this isn't the best Iced Earth cd but I think its perfect from beginning to end.
At The Gates: Slaughter Of The Soul
-Another personal fav. but I don't know how many will say that Slaughter of the Soul isn't the best At The Gates cd.
This thread isn't complete without mentioning:
Iron Maiden- Any album will do. These guys make amazing metal music.

I'm pretty predictable with the bands I nominate, but I tend to have unusual opinions as far as what their best work is...
Justice is my fave from Metallica.
Still Life is Opeth's best IMO.
And Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness seems to be the only "black metal" I can stand.
But if I had to pick only one, it's all about Pierced From Within by Suffocation. Exactly what death metal should sound like: aggressive, inhuman vocals, blasting drums, shredding guitars - all put together in tracks that are heavy and crazy, but "make sense" as songs (as opposed to a mess of thrown-together riffs).

Damn...that's a toughie (nice to see all the metal heads here though.)
Let's see, first off, if I was going to say Opeth, their best is definately Morningrise, however, I wouldn't say any of their albums is the best metal album ever...
...damn, this is hard...
...well, I just gotta go with Iron Maiden Piece of Mind.
Runners up:
Metallica 'Master of Puppets'
Devin Townsend 'Ocean Machine (Biomech)'
...and many others.

My Top Ten:
1. Metallica - Master of Puppets
2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
3. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast*
4. Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzy Blizzard of Ozz/Diary of a Madman**
5. Slayer - South of Heaven
6. Opeth - Blackwater Park
7. Judas Priest - Point of Entry/British Steel/Screaming for Vengeance***
8. Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
9. Sepultura - Roots
10. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil
* - Actually, Maiden had a great run from "Iron Maiden" to "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son," but I'd place "Number of the Beast" as their #1 definitive disc.
** - I consider these to be one album, split over two releases.
*** - Not so much a single album in this particular run, but I'd pull at least a few tracks off of each to make one album. Tough call. I only wanted to represent one band for each place, with their definitive work.
