My only hope is that they incorporate the pricing structure into something similar to the Total Choice Premiere Platinum Uber Ultimate Vista Criterion el Gigante package.

WTF is wrong with Dishnetwork. Charlie claims he is the 'leader' in HDTV. Yet Directv has one-upped him again. Come on, Dish, get your act together and announce an HD package soon!

To access HDTV channels, consumers may purchase any HDTV set with a built-in DIRECTV® Receiver or a DIRECTV-enabled high-definition set-top receiver, and a single 18 x 20- or 18 x 24-inch multi-satellite dish with three LNBs.
So how many LNBs do you need to have both HDTV and an SDTV DirecTiVo? Five?? For one TV??

Spanky BananaPants
06-03-03, 04:59 PM
Well, three LNB's. One each for the 101, 110 and 119 birds. The new 18x20 has them ready to go, which I have. That will cover all your STB's...I have a DirecTiVo, an Ultimate TV, a Hughes HD receiver, and older RCA receiver and an older Hughes receiver all running off the one dish. (Let's see...that's three receivers hooked up to the HDTV, one in the bedroom, and one in the bathroom. Maybe I need one in the kitchen too?) And I'm in a single bedroom apartment...maybe that many STB's is overkill? No way!

And sign me up for the new package! I've been wanting to cancel HBO since they're not showing Sopranos, Six Feet Under & Curb Your Enthusiasm right now anyway, and they canceled Dennis Miller. Looks like I now have the incentive! This is very good news!

Now if we can just get a HD DirecTiVo, I'll be a happy camper! (But much lighter in the wallet)

$10.99 a month is another reason why that 2006 deadline will NEVER happen.

I wonder if I will still get HBO HD and HD Net for free like I do right now. I need to get the third LNB. Das I have a question for you how do you handle your Tivo and HD DirecTV?

Great news. Now I'll have channels other then PBS to flip to when I get bored of what's on. (those arial trips to Greece are mesmerizing!) ;)

Gently.

Actually, the cerebral implant does most of the work. I just plug the PCU (primary control unit) into the base of my next, initialize the thought-matrix, and I'm good to go.

Perhaps you could rephrase the question? I'm not sure what you're asking. The DirecTiVo isn't HD, so there's really nothing I can do about it until the HDs come out. I have the triple LNB setup like steelcurtain mentioned. That signal runs through a multiswitch, and then I run two multiswitched lines to my DirecTiVo and another to my HD receiver. Both devices get the data from all 3 sats, but the DirecTiVo (and my other SD receivers) doesn't have access to the HD channels, and wouldn't know how to process them if it did.

So, I have to watch HD programming ... *gulp* ... live. Those days are numbered, though. Soon, I will no longer be constrained by such things, and the world will be mine!!!! mwuhahahaha

OK, maybe not, but it'll be hella cool, guys .

That was what I was trying to ask. Thanks. I am tempted to wait till the HD Tivo comes out.

Come on, Dish! I'm tired of seething.

Spanky BananaPants
06-04-03, 11:39 AM
If I were to do things over, I'd wait until the HDTiVo comes out. I spent around $500 on the HD STB, and I just can't handle watching live TV, so it doesn't get used much, and at this point doesn't seem to be a good investment. However, I did utilize the HD once per week on HBO when Six Feet Under was on.

Is this still happening tomorrow? I haven't seen anything about it in my mailings from directv, their website, or on the customer news channels.

huzefa
06-30-03, 08:57 PM
Yup, it's still happening according to directv customers who have HD. The channel #'s are showing up in the Directv guide (anywhere between channel 70 and 90).

I currently get HDNET on Directv, but no channel numbers yet. Should I be concerned?

76 Discovery HD (DHDT)
79 HDNet (HDN) (also on 199 until 9/1)
81 HDNet Movies (HDNM)
84 HD Special Events (SPHD) (shares capacity with HD PPV)

Other HD Programming
85 HD PPV Movies (PPVH) (shares capacity with the HD Special Events)
88 HBO HD (HBOH) (This service is mirrored to channel 509)

Thanks for the help. It turns out I need the 'Sat-C Kit' added to my oval dish. I called Directv and they're sending it to me for free.

The new channels look pretty good. I watched the Ireland show on DiscoveryHD last night. I was disappointed in ESPNHD. Why do they feel the need to stretch the nonHD programs to fill the screen? I hate image distortion! I also was unaware that ESPNHD was that same channel as ESPN, only that any show available in HD is in HD. I thought it would be a channel where they showed new and past HD sporting events. This would be much better imho.

ESPN is crappy so far to me but it should get better as they have more events in HD to broadcast....at least I hope so.

Discovery is mind blowing. The insect shows are possibly the best that my TV has looked. Truly incredible.

HDNET Movies is better than I expected. I'm amazed at how good these rather obscure movies look. I watched Freebie and the Bean and it was outstanding picture quality. The logo in lower right is annoying though.

I wonder what's going to be shown on the special events channel?

oh great..HDNet goes away on 9/1. until then, I'm going to wait until I upgrade. I can hold out on ESPN HD until football season.

A few questions:

--what audio format is football broadcast in? (2.0 or 5.1)
--any place to get a listing of what CBS football games will be in HD? Which national pre-season games will be?
--is it true that OTA HD looks better than these DirecTV channels?
--will the DirecTV HD package be adding more channels in the future?

Chew- If you're asking for ESPN specific football braodcast, go to their website and ask them. I had a question in regards to their soccer broadcasts and had it answered in a timely manner.

If you mean in general, I imagine that this season will see something like this:
Sunday Regional: 2.0
Sunday Night: 5.1
Monday Night: 5.1

I recall ABC announced that the Monday Night games would be in HD a little while ago.

Chew, it really depends on the channel in terms of quality. My OTA CBS looks incredible, but ABC and NBC aren't as good. ESPN looks like crap (in comparison), but Discovery is so stunning I could cry. If I had to rank them in my area, it would probably be CBS, Discovery, HDNet, ABC, HBO, Showtime, NBC, FOX, ESPN.

As for adding more channels, they haven't announced anything, but the fact that they've started an alternate pricing structure for HD programming makes it a pretty good possibility.
