How Does Someone Get Suspended?

Just saw that two eager-beaver DVDTalk posters, Rocky_Stallone and Buford_T_Pusser, have been suspended. First of all, what does "suspended" mean? (As opposed to "banned"?)

Secondly, how far does someone have to go to get suspended? And let me just say how much I like all of the moderators here at DVDTalk, and how wise and benevolent they all are.

See the forum rules: http://www.dvdtalk.com/legal.html

A user can get suspended for agressive or semi-abusive posting, or persistanly pushing at the boundries of the rules.

Often it's clear that a 'good' member whose posting style has ventured into the 'no so good' space needs a little break from the forum, so we give them a suspension.

Many times this break really helps and a good break from the forum can give someone some much needed perspective. If not then many times that leads to a ban.

We ban people without a warning or suspension for repeatedly advertising their site or company in the forum, pretending to be an end user, posting bootleg links, and any hate speech.

Hope this helps clarify things

Wow... I never expected to get a reply back from you, Geoff. I feel... honored, and special.

Thanks for clarifying this for me!

No, specific kind of butt kissing can get you a moderating job. (look at Gallent Pig)

True true. Unfortunately begging doesn't get you a mod job (look at Rypro 525).

Just kidding Rypro.

Seriously though, I dunno if you are just giving me ****, I didn't start that thread to get mod status. It was after spending a ton of time around the forum as a jobless soul and seeing all the crap they put up with and how well they deal with it. Especially since I'm sure I was responsible for my share of the crap. I didn't try to get the job, sure didn't ask for it, but it was cool they offered it to me. I don't think it had a lot to do with that thread, I've been posting here since '99 pretty frequently.

It's funny cuz right when I got the mod position, I ended up getting a job and have been busy as hell ever since with that and haven't had that much time to do the mod thing, although now I'm getting more time to do it and try and get to every reported post that comes down my mail box (static cling, aka speedo, usually beats me to it).

As for getting suspended, Geoff gave a great answer.

Speaking of mods, and forgive my off-topicness, but we are about to get a great new mod I believe. Watch for it.

just do a search for melon

ncmojo,

The best way to not get suspended is to read what you are going to post before you post it. If it feels a bit too aggressive copy and paste it to a notepad file and take a half hour break.

More than likely a half an hour later you will see it is a bit more over the line than you may have intended.

It is easy to get caught up in the moment. Just try and not let anyone but yourself see it

I am sure glad I have never had to do this

Because they forget to put a little guy or at the end of their post. Then they can basically say whatever they want and claim they were just kidding. At least, that's how about twenty people do it in the otter farm when it's quite clear they are posting in aggressive, if not, inappropriate ways.

We got a couple of them there people over in Movie & Music too. Go over there and say something negative about Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey or Sylvester Stallone and they'll poke their heads out...

On a more serious note, are all suspensions the same in terms of duration and severity, or is it done on a case-by-case basis?

A suspension is a suspension, so severity is pretty much the same across the board. We have had some people get suspended from particular forums before, though. Duration is usually a week, but sometimes more if it's warranted.

"This is getting immature, so this is my last post on it..."

I didn't realize that someone could be suspended from one particular forum...wow. That's some pretty omnipotent power you guys wield.

On a side note...if das was ever suspended from the TV Talk forum*, I think we'd find him in some corner of Atlanta...in the fetal position...shaking with a cold sweat.

...either that or in Book Talk.

* Like that would ever happen...

See how the posts are white background and then alternate with a gray background?

We can ban you from all the gray posts.

maybe not.
