Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 lockup. Help?

Yes, I know. I'm a pathetic individual who still only owns a PS1 console. I suck.

I have one of the original grey plastic PS's and recently picked up a used copy of Final Fantasy Tactics. After reaching a certain point about six hours in, the game always locks up completely in the middle of a cutscene. I returned the game, and picked up a brand new copy, but the exact same thing happens, the game always locks up at the exact same point. There weren't any visible scratches on either game disk and I've tried blowing out any dust in the console with a can of compressed air with no improvement. Is there anything else I can try before I start packing it up to ship off to Sonys repair dept?

If there are any long time gamers out there who've ever encountered this, I'd appreciate any advice you can offer.

Years ago, a similar lockup happened to me in Suikoden. And, like you, I returned the game for a new copy only to see the same result.

I just gave up on playing that game. The only possible solution could have been to erase the save and start over (I brought the second disc and my save to the local EB to check the results on their in-store display PSX... it still locked up, so it wasn't my machine). But even that would have had no guarantee of success.

My every other game, before and since, worked correctly. Until reading this thread, I thought I was the only one to experience this bizarre problem.

I recommend testing the game on another Playstation. If it locks up, then there's no reason to send your PS in for repairs.

If you're playing the Greatest Hits version of Tactics, I heard there was a compatiblilty issue with the PS. When the Greatest Hits version was released, there was a lot being returned. Don't know what happened at that point. If you can find a original copy, try testing that on your PS.

Why send it in for repair? Sony would probably charge you $400 to repair it when you can get a new PSOne for $50

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try replaying the game (Ugh, there go six hours of my life) first. Then if that doesn't work, I think my friend still has their PS1 hooked up for me to test it. And from the look of things there are plenty of copies of the original version to be found on EBay. I'd rather not just give up on it unless I have to. It's really an excellent game.

I've encountered this. My advice: save more often than 0 times in a 6 hour period.

I do. This particular game has four slots set aside and I save to one of them after every battle.

I was referrign to mr.snowmizer's suggestion that I replay the game and create a new set of savegames.
