The Shins - Anybody a fan of them?

I've had their debut and only album Oh, Inverted World for a year now and I must say, they completely rock.

Sort of a mixture between Simon and Garfunkle and the Beach Boys, but completely distinct in the 21st century. Anybody a fan? Know of tour dates or recent news from the band?

I love Oh, Inverted World. I know they've got a new album coming out in the next few months. Can't remember the release date though...

I like them pretty well. I know there are quite a few other people here who enjoy them.

I saw them open up for the Red House Painters a few years ago, and they were obscenely horrible. Kinda sucks, because it makes me enjoy the album so much less than I could have, had I heard the album before seeing them live.

"Oh, Inverted World" is a cool album, but everytime I hear it, I keep thinking about how angry the lead singer's whiny voice would make me when I saw them live.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be at the First Avenue show tonight. I saw them last summer and they weren't very popular. This time they are playing today and tomorrow with both shows sold out.

I'm a big fan as well, I though Chutes to Narrow was way better than the first disc though.

Kissing the Lipless is right along those lines. Glad to see Garden State converted some people to The Shins. Their music reflects the feeling of life, some happy so low. Dunno, I'm a dweeb, but I've literally gone for a week listening only to their 2 albums. And I will probably do it again when a 3rd comes out.

I'm of the opposite opinion. I was hooked on Oh Inverted World the moment I heard it. It was a beautiful hybrid of Brian Wilson and T.Rex ... or something like that.

good call on the Brian Wilson/T. Res thing

Hopefully their new album will come out before October. My sister and I are big fans of theirs.

I was going to say this thread seemed a little naive until I realized it was started almost 2 years ago. My favorite band of the last 2 years but I have to say I don't hear any T-Rex in their music. If anything I hear a heavy XTC and Beach Boys influence.

Know Your Onion is great, too. I've been a fan of The Shins since they started - it sure is great to see them appreciated!! I mentioned the fact that they started out as Flake Music in another thread asking about song recommendations - you can definitely hear the similarities between the two bands, and both are great, but The Shins have a more polished, pulled-together sound. If you like the Shins, I'd recommend checking out the bands I listed in this thread:

Listen to Weird Divide again for T. Rex. The sparse arrangements, the rhythms, and James Mercer's voice sounds like Marc Bolan. (and I'm not talking Bang a Gong here...I'm talking the tripped out rest of T Rex catalogue.)

Like I said a T Rex / Brian Wilson (as in the Beach Boys) combo to me.

Oh, Inverted World is in my truck right now - I have been listening to it for a few days straight...again. Great album from start to finish. I still haven't picked up Chutes Too Narrow. I'll get around to it one of these days.

What new album? I'm pretty sure the post you're referring to was a comment about Chutes Too Narrow. It was posted in June of 2003.

I had heard about the Shins when Oh, Inverted World came out, but never got around to picking it up or giving it a listen. When I bought the Garden State soundtrack, I immediately fell in love with those songs and picked it up. I absolutely love the album. Chutes Too Narrow is nearly as great.

I have a feeling I'll be a fan for a long time. Sucks I didn't find out about them playing around here till the show was already sold out.
