What Do You Think About LOTR: The Musical?

From IMDb:
Lord of the Rings' Musical To Premiere in London
A lavish $12 million stage musical adaptation of hit film and novel The Lord Of The Rings is to premiere in London in 2005. The production will be the biggest-budget musical ever to be staged in the British capital - and if successful, it will be taken around the world. Financial backer, American svengali Saul Zaentz, explains, "I want it to be a landmark. When you put a piece literature with such a worldwide profile on the stage you need to make something utterly extraordinary." The production, which has already spent a year and a half in development, is being directed by Matthew Warchus, who is currently overseeing the Madness musical Our House.
Not sure quite how to take this news... so I thought I would solicit ideas for what you think this might be like.

(Also... there's a Madness musical?!? Whaaaa?)

Now all we need is James Wildhorne's promised adaptation of a musical version of Blade Runner to broadway and all the nails will be in the coffin.

They should get Chicago to write the music:

I'm addicted to you, babe...you're a hard Hobbit to break!

Or maybe the Divinyls:

When I think about you, I touch my Elf!

Naw...I think the perfect choice is Barry Mantilow:

His name was Gandalf, he was a wizard,
With a big old pointy hat, and his robes grey and drab

My first reaction to this news was utter disbelief. Why do a musical for LOTR? However, after thinking on it for a bit I figure that it could be pretty interesting if done right. I'd be interested to see Gandalf break into song when he is doing battle with the Balrog--that would be worth the price of admission!

My concern is that seeing the musical could end up being hobbit-forming. (rim-tap)

Thank you, thank you! I'll here til Thursday! Try the veal!

LOTR = primarily a book = Book Forum

Musical = live theatre = Other Forum

So, why is this in Movie Forum?

Well, I think most of us have been heavily influenced by the movie version of LOTR... and besides, the Book Forum is kind of stodgy.

I was torn between the Movie Forum and the Other Forum, but frankly I feel like this is more movie slash entertainment directed, and thus a better fit in this forum.

PLUS, lately the Movie Forum has been a bit blah lately. (To be honest...)

Hmmm, who would have thought they could make a great musical from Les Misérables?

But what I would be afraid of is how they could compress the story into three hours which I would think would be about as long as it could be.
