View Full Version : News Flash: Fox to Release DVD 6 weeks after Movie Release of "Justin and Kelly"

From Wednesday's Wall Street Journal

Theater owners are expressing consternation about a plan by News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. to sell the DVD of its coming release, "From Justin to Kelly," just six weeks after the movie bows in theaters.

Fox's plan is increasing fears among theater operators that the exclusive window they have to show movies is shrinking as the DVD market becomes more important to the profitability of a movie. Typically, the DVD for a movie goes on sale about five months after the movie appears in theaters. But the window, which once averages six months, has been gradually shortening.....

But Fox movie-distribution executives have been telling theater operators in recent weeks that the studio plans to release the DVD in early August, causing some major theater chains around the country to balk at booking the movie in theaters.....

Theater operators object to Fox's plan on "From Justin to Kelly" because it could make themselves vulnerable to comply with similar terms from other studios on movies in the future. They are worried the precedent could embolden the studios to adopt the strategy one day on a big "franchise" movie.

You mean they didn't go with their original plan of handing them out as that one guy that went to see it left the theatre..?

Shame..

Continuing on that track..

Perhaps this is the excuse that theatre owners are using to "balk at booking the movie"...?

Wait...one more...

I guess Fox figured that the one weekend [and i'm being generous here] that this dreck will be in theatres wasn't enough and they still wanted it to be a "summer" movie...?

Ok. Ok. Lemme stop.

I will say one thing...i'm hoping Kelly does the usual cross-promotional FHM/Stuff/Maxim magazines [which'll probably sell more than the DVD...]

...that girl got a nice backside..

Good, this might be a good excuse for me not to see this in theaters. My girl friend is a big american idol fan but I'm just a cassual watcher, and have been dreading this movie.

In before R_S...

anyhow. This sounds like fox's best bet. They do realize that if they waited the six months to release it on dvd like any normal film that the interest would be dead since there is no new American Idol to hype it up with. This will also show that the fad is something that fox wants to cash in on as soon as possible.

Anyhow. this is scary for the theaters as they make the majority of their profit from the films later weeks take in and if fox is eating that up with dvd sells.. this could be a bad sign for theater chains.

I think the industry's been heading this way for some time now...most movies open BIG then drop BIG the following week or two. Pretty soon the films are going to be in theatres for only one month the way things are going..

It's sad. I remember back in 81 when Raiders came out..our local newspaper had a big ass blurb "Number One Movie For 18 Weeks!" I don't think it's amazing that it was number one, just that it played for 18 weeks.

Then again, there was less output from Hollywood back then..so I guess i'm just waxing nostalgic..

ps...what's "R_S..."?

In before the "STFU."

On topic, while the theatrical window has been narrowing, I imagine this is more indicative of the marketing strategy American Idol related products have had than anything else.

Good idea for this kind of movie for Fox. I definatly agree with keeping up the fad as long as it can. Personally, i think the movie is going to end up a mild success. I know i won't see it, but i saw a clip of it and it didn't seem so bad. Looked like a modern day musical in the same vain of early hollywood musicals.

This is either a sign of things to come in the future with DVD, or is indicative that this movie is baaaadddd.

This isn't true, the DVD release date has been pushed back for another 6 weeks, so 3 months after the theatrical release :

Fox rethinks 'Idol' film's vid window
In an effort to ensure that its theatrical run would be played in the
nation's largest theater chains, 20th Century Fox Studios has moved its
home video window of the "American Idol" movie "From Justin to Kelly" back
six weeks after numerous theatrical exhibitors balked at the original
video date, which was scheduled six weeks after the theatrical debut on
June 13.

And seriously those of you who have doubts about this movie, I can see why you would think that but don't worry, go see it with an open mind and you'll have a great time.

The choregraphy and the music are great and the acting/love plot is not bad.

I'm a big Kelly Clarkson fan but when I see a good movie, I know to give it props.

What's R_S?, the defender of Idol of course. :p anyhow. It might be the way the industry has been heading, but this will be a very bad move for the theaters who are already in trouble as I said, they make the majority of profit from the later weeks since the studio's get a greater % of the films take the first few weeks. Lets see how this plays out.

You are so right Jack. Nothing would please the studios more than if they could release a movie in theaters for only 3 weeks (when exhibitors get less than 10% of the box office) then put the DVD out on the 4th week, killing the period when the exhibitor's take increases, and then put a new movie in theaters.

For a movie that starts in two weeks I haven't seen a commercial for it yet. I think FOX has no faith in this film at all and that is why they initially wanted to hurry up and release it on DVD so they could capitalize on the American Idol hoopla. But the theater owners got pissed off and they changed the date. If I was a theater owner I would only play this on one screen anyway so I don't see why they are flipping out. It's not like this was going to be the big blockbuster summer movie of the year. I am surprised FOX didn't pull a Disney and just release it straight to video. They would probably make more money that way.

Fox has faith in this movie. The test screenings went extremely well and they are promoting it a lot. You just hate everything AI related and you keep making negative judgments about it even though you know nothing about the facts.
I've seen previews for it on MTV, Fox, WB, and a lot of other major networks.

Like WWE Jedi, i've yet to see a commercial for this thing too [and I watch all the channels you mentioned..]. Now, I don't know what goes through FOX execs heads [nor do I think i'd want to..], but he prefaced his statement with "I think" rather than insisting that it was fact..

Or in the immortal words of Warren Oates..."Lighten up, Francis.."

Well sorry if I take it so personally but this gal worked her butt off to make this movie worthwhile and good.

I know people think it's cheesy and it kinda is but in good way. It's a great fun movie and if people have an open mind when they walk in the theater, they will have a great time.

Like I said previously, the acting is good and the music and choregraphy is great. It's not gonna bomb that's for sure because unlike you I've seen the trailer at least 10 times in the last week and the right audience is targeted ( teens )

Fox has great faith in it since the test screenings went so well. It's one of the reasons the movie was pushed from April to June.

People are entitled to their opinions but they gotta stop to have pre-conceived ideas about the movie and just see it and then say what they thought of it.

If they don't like it I'm ok with it, at least they will have made the effort to see it.

I have yet to see a single trailer or tv spot either. None are even on the official site. The sole promotion I've seen in person was a poster at my local Loews Theater.

No reviews are available yet either which isn't too good a sign if critics aren't being shown this film at this point. Normally there's at least a few press screenings at least 2 weeks before a release.

mcbg1
05-28-03, 08:25 PM
It's very rare that press screenings happen 2 weeks before a movie's release date

As a matter of fact though, the premiere is taking place right now in Burleson Texas ( Kelly's Hometown ) so expect a few reviews to appear online in the next few days.

The official site ( www.fromjustintokelly.com ) lets you listen to music from the movie and three clips from the movie are shown so that's good promotion.

I've seen the trailer during the AI2 finale, the AI episode the week before and also during 7th heaven's Finale last week. I've also seen it a couple of times this week during TRL. It's been aired on a couple of other networks also.

briank
05-28-03, 08:33 PM
the only promotion I've seen on it was during AI on Fox and a little bit on MTV.

I don't think Fox has much faith in it. I think they know what to expect hence the early dvd release.

 "OPINION is wrong"

it's an OPINION! And I'm basing it on their dvd release plans.
If they expected it to do real well in the theater they wouldn't try to push it to video so quickly.
Because if it was a "good time" movie people would watch it not only in the theater but they would get it on video too.
If it was coming out so quickly after it's release to video, they would just wait (or atleast A LOT WOULD).
And Fox might be thinking they'd be able to sell to the AI crowd on video, but if they saw it, they wouldn't bother buying it (...maybe not having faith in it).
I'm just brainstorming.

I think when they started production on the movie they had high hopes.
I think now they are coming down to "real world" terms on it.
So they might not be "dissapointed" because now they know more what to expect.

I don't know Kelly but I do know very well someone very close to her and that's why I take it very personally when she's insulted.

The dichotomy of certain opinions being presented as definitive facts in the same breath as overwhelmingly abrasive attempts to silence any other opinion is so laughably entertaining, I can't keep from returning to this thread.

The "wait until you see it" mantra rings boy-who-cried-wolf hollow, since we've already been through this with the album. It was all "wait until you hear it," people listened to it, and upon offering up their opinions, the thread for the album was deleted, and we were all told how stupid we were for having a dissenting opinion.

Repeatedly telling people to STFU in the same breath as demanding they act "mature" makes it difficult for anyone to take seriously all these claims of how nice and sweet Kelly is. I used to consider her a nice girl with a great voice who could see some real success once she broke free from the initial pop sound American Idol inherently breeds. After being told which of my opinions have no value, when I'm allowed to speak and when I should STFU, I don't want to have anything to do with any of it.

It's amazing how short a time it's taken to go from wishing her well to hoping for colossal failure. One guess what the catalyst for that was ...

This is exactly what I was thinking. If they had made the announcement to release the movie early on DVD after the film had been released and was a huge success, like what MGM did with Barbershop, then I wouldn't be so quick to think there was something wrong with the film. But they made this initial announcement two weeks before the film was to be released in theaters. What else are we supposed to think?

Making threats is about the most frowned-upon thing you can do here. If you feel DVD Talk's policies have been violated, the "Report a post to a moderator" button is on every post. Report it and be done with it. Word to the wise, though ... you may want to go back and edit all the personal attacks and STFUs you've thrown around the past few days before doing so. This culture of antagonistic posting is hardly one-sided, and I believe all the Victim Cards have already been played from this deck. If you don't want to be put in the position of defending such statements, you may consider not telling everyone their opinions are worthless and to shut up. "Shut up" is about the last thing anyone at DVD Talk understands.

Not much direct competition, but if Dumb and Dumberer comes in at PG-13 like its predecessor, it should eat up some of it. Considering the lack of direct competition and the fact that it's tailored specifically for the summer season, I'll say it grosses $7,000.00 during opening weekend.

Theater Owners Balk at 'Idol' Flick

Some theater owners are balking at screening the upcoming 20th Century Fox movie From Justin to Kelly after learning that Fox plans to release it on DVD just six weeks after it runs in theaters, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Wednesday). The movie, scheduled for release on June 13, stars Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini, the winner and runner-up respectively in the first season of American Idol. According to the newspaper, theater owners are concerned that studios may decide to use a similar strategy with other films in order to boost DVD sales. Noting that the average "window" from theatrical release to DVD release is about five months, the Journal indicated that theater owners are worried that if moviegoers become aware that the DVD will be released in only a short time, they will skip the in-theater experience. Fox execs, however, said that the quickly produced movie was an attempt to exploit the popularity of the series while it is still fresh in the minds of audiences -- as is the quick release of the DVD.

I don't know, Hollywood Homicide could take a huge chunk of the teen audience. Teenage girls, like my sister, are going to go to a Josh Hartnett movie over the AI movie.

If you're so tight with Kelly would you please carry this message to her:

Tell her that I think she sucks hard, her fame is bogus, her music sucks, that she's a corporate concoction with zero talent, and that American Idol is the worst show on television...EVER.

And if you're so sure this film film will be a hit why don't you put your money where your mouth is? If the American Idol movie is #1 on it's opening weekend I'll buy you the DVD when it comes out (3 weeks later). And if it's not #1 you buy me the DVD of my choice (under $25).

This just in from the wire: Mariah Carey will appear in the film doing a cameo as herself, in which she will literally poop on her fans! Says Carey of the appearance: "Well, it's been something I've done figuratively for years, I figure I might as well commit myself to it completely." Kelly Clarkson is also excited about the cameo, saying "We all know that Mariah is a great singer, dancer, and actress. Now we get to finally get to see where her true talent lies." Added Clarkson: "OMG!"

This thread is about Fox's plans to release the DVD 6 weeks (or maybe 3 months) after the theatrical release of J&K. This thread is not about discussing the merits of the film. mcbg1, this especially means you - it's obvious you liked the film, but you do not need to tell those who don't think it will be good to "shut up" - I don't know...I would have figured out a while ago that the "general" community isn't looking forward to this film and I would have stayed out of threads discussing them, knowing that people would be bashing the film. Further attacks on members, the general DVDTalk community, or anyone else will not be tolerated and will result in a suspension.

Back on track now...

(any further off topic comments will be considered immature ;))

Jackskeleton
05-29-03, 06:03 PM
Ok.. back on track.. This is not a good sign for theaters since they make the majority of thier money from films from the later weeks since the studios take a large % of the first few weeks of release.. What will be the outcome. I think that many theaters will choose to not have this play or have it in one small theater or as few screens as possible just so that they can recover the loss quicker.

ChefWinduAZ
05-29-03, 06:13 PM
That is exactly what I am thinking. My local theater has 30 screens and in the main lobby are the four largest screens. And those four screens are usually reserved for the biggest releases of the week. Like when X2 was released it was on 3 of the 4 and Lizzie Maguire was one the other big screen. But when The Matrix Reloaded came out it was on all four of the large screens. Now with this "flm", FJtK, I see it being in one of the smallest screens far away from the front lobby.

20th Changes It's Mind
From IMDb:Twentieth Century Fox has bowed to protests by theater owners and has delayed the video release of From Justin to Kelly, which originally had been set to hit rental and retail outlets only six weeks after its theatrical release. After some of the country's largest exhibitors threatened to refuse bookings of the film on the grounds that many moviegoers would simply wait six weeks for the video to appear, 20th Century Fox decided to postpone the DVD release until September.

To be honest, when a flick comes out that I really want to see, I usually do my damndest to see it opening weekend [or opening day]. If it takes me more than a week or two to see it, it usually falls off my radar..so 6 weeks to DVD wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing..

It's not like this movie will have legs (be playing for a long period of time) anyway... especially in the summer. With the big opening weekend being the focus nowadays, studios will try to cram each new summer release into as many screens as possible. Almost every theater is contracted to show a movie for two weeks in the very least (which is why a mega flop like Pluto Nash was still playing in the same number of theaters in week 2 as week 1 - 2320) But after that most movies start dropping screens week after week. With so much competition for screens it's doubtful this movie will be playing on more than 100 screens after six weeks, even IF it's a minor hit. I think it'll open somewhere between "Crossroads" and that N Sync bomb "On the Line"... which is admittedly a pretty wide margin.

On a side note, while the movie itself might be a decent idea, that title blows hard. "From Justin to Kelly"?!? Did they think the Idol fans wouldn't figure out they were in the movie otherwise? What's next... "Terminator 3: Rise of the Schwarzenegger"?

angryyoungman
05-30-03, 01:53 AM
I think that the studios will continue to plan to release DVDs of movies they don't think will do terribly well at the box office--or that they know will do well on DVD--very close to the theatrical releases. In the future, however, they probably won't be as boneheaded as Fox and make such a big deal of it. If they had kept their plans to themselves, theater chains wouldn't have complained and they STILL could have released the DVD 6 weeks after the theatrical release. The chains might have complained afterwards, but I think the studios would have the leverage in that case since the chains couldn't claim that potential moviegoers skipped the theater solely in anticipation of a quick DVD release.

And really, since this quick release trend is only happening with titles that don't do well in theaters anyway, it shouldn't matter that much to the chains.

Also the movie is pushed to June 20th because the demand is higher than expected and theaters owners need more time to reserve their screens for this movie.

The first feature-length movie in the ``American Idol'' franchise won't debut for two weeks, but it already has disaster written all over it!

``From Justin to Kelly'' features the singing, dancing and line-reading talents of first ``Idol'' winner Kelly Clarkson and her runner-up boytoy, Justin Guarini, as they spin through a swiftly fabricated musical romance.

A Fox rep confirmed yesterday the film will debut June 20 - a week later than scheduled - and gave no explanation for the studio's decision not to offer advance press screenings.

But when a studio elects to leave critics out of the loop, it's generally because the flick's soooo bad even Hollywood's most deluded optimists have gone to Plan B: Try to get as many unsuspecting fools into the cinemas on opening weekend before Justin and Kelly are croaked by bad word-of-mouth.

``It's certainly a piece of work,'' said Someone Who's Seen It. The film has America's democratically elected Idol and her consort sharing love and laughter against the exotic backdrop of spring break in Miami.

With listless deliveries better suited to confessions at gunpoint, the couple first meet when Kelly helps Justin escape a herd of party girls by climbing through a bathroom window. But Justin fears his hair is ``too big'' to fit through! ``I'm from Texas,'' Miss Independent robotically intones. ``I've seen bigger.'' Oy.

Movies are never moved back because of increased demand and greater anticipation than expected. Sometimes they're moved forward, but never back.

Sounds like your Fox friend is feeding you the spin. "Oh we're moving it back because it's going to be a bigger hit than it's expected and we need more time to get the theaters ready....yeah that's the ticket."

So what's our opening weekend predictions? mcbg1, we know you like it (which is perfectly ok) but what means "Not a flop"?

I say less than 4 mil opening weekend.

(I will probably check it out once it hits HBO btw)

Interesting tidbit from the Reuters article:

"Release windows have been gradually closing for some time in the industry. According to numbers tracked by the National Association of Theater Owners, the average time between theatrical and home video release totaled five months and eight days for the industry this year, while last year's totals were five months and 12 days."

So, the industry average has slipped less than 3% since last year? That hardly seems a trend worth noting.

On a side note, why was pants suspended and mcbg1 (who has been significantly more disruptive and insulting) not?

I throw a movie party once a month. It's a great excuse to watch cheesy films, drink beer, "light up" and have a Mystery Science Theater type running commentary. I cannot wait for this one to be released on DVD. :)

Guess what.. No screening for critics.. Man, Fox has pretty much stamped the death certificate for this film with it's actions. ;)

American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson has backed a decision by 20th Century Fox not to screen From Justin to Kelly, her upcoming movie with runner-up Justin Guarini, for film critics. In an interview with TV Guide, appearing in today's (Monday) online edition, Clarkson remarks, "I can tell you right now that none of the critics are gonna like this movie. They like stuff like In the Bedroom. They're gonna want to tear into it because all people like to do is build something up to tear it down. This movie shouldn't be screened by the critics because it's not for them -- it's for the fans." Asked whether she found acting "a challenge," Clarkson replied, "Justin and I are used to learning while just doing it. ... It's not like it's The Shawshank Redemption. Twelve-year-olds aren't into that."

mcbg1
06-16-03, 09:52 PM
well she's right, critics won't like it no matter what the film would be like.

It's something for the fans and not for people expecting a piece of art. It's just a fun brainless summer movie.

Just a recap:

• Quoth mcbg1 •
Fox has faith in this movie. The test screenings went extremely well and they are promoting it a lot. You just hate everything AI related and you keep making negative judgments about it even though you know nothing about the facts.
I've seen previews for it on MTV, Fox, WB, and a lot of other major networks.

WWE Jedi : You have no idea of what you're talking about so shut the hell up.

• Quoth mcbg1 •
Like I said previously, the acting is good and the music and choregraphy is great. It's not gonna bomb that's for sure because unlike you I've seen the trailer at least 10 times in the last week and the right audience is targeted ( teens )

Fox has great faith in it since the test screenings went so well. It's one of the reasons the movie was pushed from April to June.

• Quoth mcbg1 •
well I think you don't know anyone inside Fox and 19 Entertainment so you're opinion is wrong.

They have faith in this movie and they will stick by it.

• Quoth mcbg1 •
I don't know Kelly but I do know very well someone very close to her and that's why I take it very personally when she's insulted.

I don't care if some people don't have faith in it, I'm saying I know that Fox and 19 Entertainment have faith in it and will stick by it.

I'm telling you to back off and calm down, I will say what I believe is right and no one will stop me. I know what I'm talking about since I've seen the final product.

So unless you've seen the movie, all of you need to calm down and stop bashing it.

• Quoth chrisih8u •
I just read in the paper that this will not be screened for critics.

• Quoth mcbg1 •
You should name a source before making this statement

By the way the movie WILL be screened for critics.

• Quoth mcbg1 •
My source at Fox told me this morning that the movie will be sent to more theaters than previously planned due to a high demand and that the movie will be screened to critics probably late next week or the week before the movie's release.

Let me know if I've missed anything. With a 7 page thread, I wouldn't want the factual information to get lost in all the arguing. mcbg1, as you have noted your "sources" inside Fox and have vehemently maintained the accuracy of your statements, I hope you don't mind that I have quoted you here. mcbg1
06-17-03, 03:24 PM
Why does people keep comparing J2K to the real cancun ?

The real cancun was basically a reality movie with just regular people going to spring break doing non-scripted stuff.

From Justin To Kelly is a scripted movie musical where people act and it is targeted at kids and teens so it is much more mainstream. Yes it features two people from reality shows but these people are acting and they have a lot of experience in it ( ex : plays and theater )

In all truth. You really can't say these folks are acting. they might have had some small time theater experience but just like I have played Operation a couple of times, it doesn't mean you would let me operate on you. :p or would you. I have inside sources that say I'm a really good doctor. ;)

Ok so people here are entitled to their opinion but god forbid if someone actually likes the movie, then they will forever persecuted because of this ? :)

By the way, if Fox wanted to make a quick buck out of it, why didn't they release it last april when AI2 was still running and it was clearly the right time to release it ? Or why did they push it from June 13th when it had a chance to make a lot of money to June 20th against The Hulk ? It just seems like there's something Fox see in it that your source isn't telling you... once again : :)

Someone liking it has nothing to do with it. I wouldn't mind someone really caring about AI and not being so vocal about it. You jumped the train and started telling people to "STFU" and your many many different times you stated that a comment would be the last from you only to come back 2 minutes later to post again. Your actions has stapled you as one of those "crazy" members that everyone liked to laugh about.

Anyhow. Why didn't they release it during AI's time frame? I would assume post production work was needed. I'm sure Fox was hoping to cash in on that but just couldn't make it. Then the push from june 13th.. well again, post production work could have pushed it. Now why it's being put up against the HULK.. I'm sorry, but this doesn't mean that fox has faith in this. This simply means that they are trying to put it up against something that already has a set audiance in hopes that everyone who is not part of that said audiance will go to AI as an alternative. this is like ESPN showing Ice skating on monday nights when ABC is showing NFL. You try to appeal to the others so that a family can go to the movies. Young billy would like to see the Hulk with dad and Mom and little katie can go see Justin to Kelly.

My source told me what he told me. that fox doesn't have much faith, but is willing to get as much as they could. Your source has already been proven wrong.. if you even have a source inside. You act like it's a big secret. You do realize that these "sources" are just friends talking about what is going on. Stuff to talk about the water cooler about and it's not like they are trying to cover anything. they say what they know. as we can see from your "sources" miss-information, they had something they weren't TELLING YOU. ;) either that or you weren't willing to hear because of your AI tainted glasses.

either way.. the moral of this thread... getting owned is pretty funny. :p

No, no personal grudge against it. I just find it down right funny that you take one stance and disregard everyone else's comments. In many cases you tell them off and pass it off as you are doing nothing wrong. Then when it comes to pasture and it ends up you were wrong, you can't eat crow.

You questioned My "sources" and stood by yours and now that we find out your sources were wrong I just enjoy gloating so much about it. :)
