TiVo Upgrade Question

I just upgraded my TiVo from 30 hours to 69

Anyone else done this? What did you use to secure the new HD? I see people online selling the brackets for about $20. Anywhere else I can get these? They aren't custom made, are they? anyone try the cable tie way? did it work? Any suggestions? Thanks.

It really depends on the model of TIVO you have...
The series 2 doesn't have a mount for a second hard drive and supposedly doesn't have enough power to power two HDs anyway... there are custom fixes for both.

I dunno about the cable tie method... it seems a little risky to me, especially for a component like a HD. Check tivocommunity, though...

I picked up the brackets when I upgraded my series 1 unit. Worked out great.

Did you buy a modded TiVo because afaik they don't make them with two HDDs.

Venusian, buy a hard drive bracket at 9th Tee for $16. They are custom-made, but fit perfectly.

I just used some rails from an old hard drive. I attached them to the bottom of the drive instead of the sides and mounted it with some padded tape.

how exactly did you do this? i tied a couple of cable ties together to make it long enough to go around. in can tie the "front to back" fine, but the side to side is a little harder becasue the metal carriage under the drives doesnt have wholes on one side.

It's been a while, I know I tied two ties together. I felt it was good enough since the unit was not going in an aircraft or ship or subject to shock of any kind. It just sits there.

Nope; it came with two HDs from the factory.

I've wanted to upgrade my Tivo for a long time, but I'm afraid to do it. I don't want to screw it up. I am pretty good with computer stuff, but after reading up on how to do it, it just scares me more. Are there any reputable places online that do the upgrade for a reasonable price?

its not hard at all. it probably took longer to open the tivo and put the hard drive into my computer than it did to actually do the upgrade. actually the longest part was finding the right screwdriver and the right files.

most of the time is taken in making a backup then testing it to see if it works. you dont really have to do this but i guess its not recommended to skip it.

If you're decent with computers (can install hardrives etc) then you can probably do it on your own. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer, although I'm not a pro, just someone who did it yesterday

I would recommend: http://www.pvrupgrade.com/

They sell the complete kit (I got a 120g harddrive for my DirecTiVo shipped for just under $200). I went from 35hrs to 110 hrs. Given they do all the work and include all the necessary tools, I thought it was a good price. Plus, they have a 6 month warranty.

Another to check out: http://tivo.weaknees.com/index.php
