TiVo Upgrade Question
I just upgraded my TiVo from 30 hours to 69
Anyone else done this? What did you use to secure the new HD? I see people online selling the brackets for about $20. Anywhere else I can get these? They aren't custom made, are they? anyone try the cable tie way? did it work? Any suggestions? Thanks.

It really depends on the model of TIVO you have...
The series 2 doesn't have a mount for a second hard drive and supposedly doesn't have enough power to power two HDs anyway... there are custom fixes for both.
I dunno about the cable tie method... it seems a little risky to me, especially for a component like a HD. Check tivocommunity, though...

It's been a while, I know I tied two ties together. I felt it was good enough since the unit was not going in an aircraft or ship or subject to shock of any kind. It just sits there.

I've wanted to upgrade my Tivo for a long time, but I'm afraid to do it. I don't want to screw it up. I am pretty good with computer stuff, but after reading up on how to do it, it just scares me more. Are there any reputable places online that do the upgrade for a reasonable price?

its not hard at all. it probably took longer to open the tivo and put the hard drive into my computer than it did to actually do the upgrade. actually the longest part was finding the right screwdriver and the right files.
most of the time is taken in making a backup then testing it to see if it works. you dont really have to do this but i guess its not recommended to skip it.
If you're decent with computers (can install hardrives etc) then you can probably do it on your own. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer, although I'm not a pro, just someone who did it yesterday

They sell the complete kit (I got a 120g harddrive for my DirecTiVo shipped for just under $200). I went from 35hrs to 110 hrs. Given they do all the work and include all the necessary tools, I thought it was a good price. Plus, they have a 6 month warranty.
