The Internet Movie Database is reporting that the WICKER MAN remake to be directed by Neil (THE SHAPE OF THINGS) LaBute is moving forward with Nicolas Cage starring. Cage will play the Edward Woodward role of a policeman searching for a missing girl who winds up on an island inhabited by a pagan society—though the setting will be switched from Britain to America. LaBute outlined a further change in the story: “Nick’s character ends up [among] a very matriarchal society whose members are direct descendants of the Pilgrims. Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder would be two great choices. It’s a great film for actresses.” Of course, after Jolie grabbed the GIRL, INTERRUPTED Oscar Ryder was shooting for, they might not want to have those two on the same set, but in any case, no start date has been set yet for the Universal project."
This ranks just below the rumored CASABLANCA remake on the all-time "dumb ideas" list ......

Descendants of the pilgrams? Somehow, I think it makes more sense to keep the movie set in Britain, but oh well. Not looking forward to this, even though I liked the original.

My favorite part is: Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder would be two great choices. Yeah, great choices...if you don't want me to see the movie. Excuse me but the original movie had hot chicks in it.

Agreed. What I don't understand is WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY a remake of THIS movie. The movie has it's cult following, but not nearly enough to warrent a box office hit. This movie in no way has a mass appeal to it.

Are they still remaking this still? It's not on imdb anymore.
Just saw the original based on recommendations from this forum, wow, one of the creepiest movies I have ever seen, quite a bit of gratuitous nudity though, the end of the movie totally surprised me, excellent 9/10
On a side note:
I went to imdb.com to read some of the comments about it, the one that comes up by default is this guy that absolutely hated this movie, I proceeded to go through his other comments, its like he has the totally opposite taste in movies I do, it annoyed the hell out of me, everyone should have my opinions :)

Neil LaBute, what in the hell has happened to your sense of taste? Leave it like it is -- good, and full of Christopher Lee fun.

LOL, that is just what I was thinking too. That I would gladly pay money for, this I am not so sure about. I will probably see it though, due to a sick loyalty to Nic and Angelina that no number of bad movies can seem to break me from. I think I need medication.

I'm all for this remake actually.
Throw in Christopher Lee and I'm golden.
I'd rather see an adult Hollywood remake of an interesting classic (granted it stays true to the material) than numerous amounts of crap that gets put out every week.
Oh, and Angelina Jolie and Wynona are quite hot. Wynona could pull off the sexy school teacher thing no problem, and Angelina could be my naked dancing temptress any day of the week.

Nicolas Cage, who I hate above all others, makes me want to vomit blood. The idea of him starring in a remake of one of my favorite films makes me want to then crap blood on my vomited blood.
And since it'll be a major Hollywood project, you can bet your bippy they'll change the ending.
I can all ready see Nic remembering that he has a gun in his back pocket and blasting his way out of the Wicker Man
Then again, if they bring back Ingrid Pitt, I may stop my whining.

This sounded stupid untill I heard Neil LeBute is involved.
You guys are really selling this short. He's a brilliant director and I doubt he would be approaching this project if he didn't have something to bring to the material that made it worth seeing again.

I don't know if I'm ready to call LaBute brilliant yet. I thought Possession was a big, disappointing bore. But the edgier and more disturbing the material is, the better he is (e.g. In the Company of Men).
Since The Wicker Man is nothing if not edgy and disturbing, this may be perfect for him.

Nicolas Cage's Next is The Wicker Man
Source: Variety March 4, 2005
Nicolas Cage's next picture will be director Neil LaBute's remake of 1973 thriller The Wicker Man, with Millennium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films producing, reports Variety.
LaBute adapted the screenplay, in which a sheriff investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island off the coast of Maine. His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.
The movie will begin production July 15 in Vancouver. Cage is currently shooting comic book adaptation Ghost Rider in Melbourne.

Nicholas Cage, huh? Well, at least it's not Ben Affleck.
The original was a cult hit only as far as I remember. I just don't see how this flick would appeal to mainstream audiences unless they stray far away from the original material.
Well, that poster really gets me excited about this :boring:
I think I'm set with my 2-disk DVD set of the original, thank you very much. Like most of you, this seems a completely pointless remake. Carrie the Musical might not be too bad. After all, Reefer Madness and Little Shop of Horrors may have sounded like stupid ideas until you saw them. Has anyone heard any other casting -- like who plays Christopher Lee's part?

Yes, they learned American audiences will go see anything devoid of originality...therefore Hollywood keeps churning out the remakes. :horse:

I am interested in seeing what they do to this since I am a very recent fan of the original film. Caught it on satellite and had no clue what it was about. Watched most of it with my mouth open (stunned at something so original yet I had never heard of it)and couldn't wait to see it again.

True.. it used to remake sound versions of all the silent movies, The Merry Widow (1925/34) or Anna Kerenina (sp?) (1935) is a remake of Greta Garbo's Love. But thats only its own products. Did it keep remaking films from other countries then? :)

Set in Maine, huh? Trying to ride Stephen King coat tails?
A large part of the original's effectiveness was due to the fact that it was practically a folk musical - think about how much singing and dancing (albeit erotic) there was. The seemingly naive simplicity is what made the eventual conclusion so chilling.
(As for the Christopher Lee role - John Malkovich, Gary Oldman or Christopher Walken.)

Leelee Sobieski and Ellen Burstyn are joining Nicolas Cage in Neil LaBute's indie "The Wicker Man," produced by Millenium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films. A remake of a 1973 British horror film, "Wicker Man" centers on a police officer (Cage) who is investigating the disappearance of a girl in a small cultlike community. Sobieski plays a barmaid who is Cage's confidant. Burstyn plays the head of the cult. The film is shooting in Vancouver.

just those pictures of the set have convinced me that this remake is indeed a terrible terrible idea. i just can't buy this story taking place in the United States... it just doesn't make sense to have a functioning pagan society in the US from a historical perspective... whereas, i think it was much more believable that there would still be one functioning on an isolated British island as in the original film.
terrible terrible idea.

I just now watched the original for the first time and quite liked it. (alas, the end was spoiled for me because I watched a "scariest horror movies" clip show last year). I'll likely see the remake as I'm a sucker for Nicolas Cage movies. Just hope they keep the same ending.
I do have a question about the original and didn't want to start a new thread:
I only saw the shorter cut of the film, so this may be explained in the extended cut. In the documentary on the DVD it showed a clip in which only Sgt. Howie (and no one else) received the letter with Rowan's picture. Were the pagans just taking a chance that he'd be a virgin or did they somehow know this beforehand? (I'm thinking the former - that Willow's nekkid song and dance was a test.) Was his virginity a "bonus" since he was already a man of the law that came to the island of his own free will?
brianluvdvd

DJLinus: I think that they knew. In the extended cut there is a brief scene with his fellow officers & they are talking about how he is a boy scout & doesn't get any action (of course i am paraphrasing). There is also a scene in the extended cut of him fervently delivering a prayer. It comes across to me that his reputation was known by many & I figure the pagans did their research. Just my opinion though as I don't remember it ever being stated that they knew.

So, has Nic Cage's Superman money ran out or what? I like the guy, but he's taking some seemingly crappy roles. Ghost Rider (looks mediocre), possible Oldboy remake, and now a Wicker Man remake. Next up, Peggy Sue Got Divorced.
