In search of intelligent science fiction movies...

I'm hoping to head into the long weekend with a list of some great 'thinking' science fiction movies.

I'm tired of action movies that happen to take place in space, thereby making them 'science fiction'. I'd like to think some new thoughts instead of covering my eyes as not to see flying bug guts.

I really liked both Contact and the Matrix.

Anyone have any suggestions?

2001 and the Russian version of Solaris should qualify(though if Solaris is intelligent or just incomprehensible is debatable)

Contact is an astronomically boring film that is all talk. It's terribly overrated, and while its script is no doubt intelligent and sharp on diatribes and discussions concerning extra-terrestrial life and the finality of OUR life itself, there's no action in the movie.

Jodie Foster shoots into space.

I don't know if Donnie Darko is considered sci-fi, but I'd highly recommend it.

And yet another vote for Dark City. GREAT movie!!

Pants, WADR none of the titles on your list, except for Blade Runner, are really "thinking" movies. They are all good movies, just not flicks that leave much to think about.

Most of the serious sci-fi flicks that I am familiar with have already been suggested. I'll add Silent Running , 1984 (though this is perhaps more speculative than sci-fi), Fahrenheit 451 and echo:

* 2001
* 12 Monkeys
* Gattaca
* The Day the Earth Stood Still
* Forbidden Planet
* Solaris (I like both versions)

Some interesting titles not yet available on DVD:

* Colossus: The Forbin Project
* Demon Seed
* The 27th Day

If you’re willing to watch anime:

It's light years beyond most standard Hollywood sci-fi.

I would avoid that crappy X-Files movie. Everything else is pretty good, though.

Thanks!! Looks like I have the makings of a long list.

I've seen Forbidden Planet, Alien, Minority Report, AI, 2001, 12 Monkeys and Frequency. I'm very partial to most of them and the rest of them were worth watching, at the very least.

I have also seen Starship Troopers AKA 'Big Bugs in Space'.

I have seen the X-Files movie (not surprisingly). I like the series, especially the early years, a lot better.

As far as tv goes, I like ST:NG and love Babylon 5. I am a Buffy virgin, but my sis is going to change that.

I appreciate all the input. Family Video here I come!

I love science fiction, but sometimes you have to wade through much crap to get to the good stuff...

The Time Machine (1960 original), not the remake is a classic.

So what three books would you have taken?

so Robocop isn't a "thinking" film huh? I beg to differ.

The only thing on my list that's pure silliness is Journey to the Center of the Earth

20,000 Leagues and Robocop are both very political and Alien will keep you thinking for awhile about the sexual and gender themes in the film.
