Baise Moi

Has anyone seen this film ? I heard it's supposed to be really graphic as far as sex and violence. I read that it was banned in France, it's country of origin.

I've seen it. It is indeed really graphic -- more so in the sex than in the violence. The sex is real -- some parts are similar to what you'd see in a porn film. The sex is not all that erotic though (if that's what you're looking for) -- graphic, but not erotic.

Also, the film's not that good (at least in my opinion). Maybe worth a rent, but definitely not a purchase, at least not for me.

Here is the short review I wrote about it at IMDb:

Baise Moi http://us.imdb.com/Details?0249380 is an interesting story about two bored sociopathic women, who, after losing their boyfriends (a pimp and a drug pusher) to violence, break their remaining connections with violence of their own. They don’t try to justify their behavior to themselves and both they and the film refuse to be bound by any categorization. The violence they experience and that they commit has no justification and there is nothing loving or sympathetic about the blood and sex shown. The camera just watches them take control as they wait for the police to catch them and listens to them talk about how they would like to die. I think that in the expressed nullity of their bored lives, the director has created something worth seeing and thinking about. It is more a truth-telling mirror of elements in our society than a comfortable portrait that puts it in a safe place. 9 out of 10

It is graphic but the point of the film is how bored the two killers are about everything they do. Sex is just another drug and there is no logic to who they kill. The book on which it is based includes them killing an infant. The movie is intentionally shot so that it looks very grainy and unappealing as the idea is how banal and empty it all is.

I agree w/ Walter. The sex is graphic (rape scenes) and the rest of it is horrible. The violence is up there but nothing you really havent seen before. It is not even a good story. I feel sorry I wasted a netflix rental on it.

I concur. This movie had not a single redeeming quality. It was graphic, which answers your question. Now that you know that, don't watch it.

Well...

The 2 starring actresses ARE porn stars, hence the sex scenes are graphics since it probably doesn't bother them any.

It's basically a hardcore Thelma and Louise, portraying, well, imagine being raped, and bad things happening to you and a friend. Then how many guys say they would get even, etc. (after Columbine, kids were talking about what they would have done if they had a chance to get close to the 2 gunmen)...this takes that from a women's perspective, that they are capable of acting out on the world just as men do.

The thing about the movie was that, men were condemming it, but men meanwhile will watch a women get beaten and not care.

(yes, I am a guy!) I find the movie interesting in terms of the portrayal of 2 women who just lose it.

Their desires of sex and revenge against society, etc....BUT for films about violence, sex, or lasting impact on people...I find Natural Born Killers, Irreversible, with more of an impact.

I personally thought this was a strong movie. I don't really care that the actresses are pornstart (didn't know this actually). Thing is, this movie got lots of attention because of the graphic representation of events, and it that respect it made people think.

I can't say I enjoyed the movie, but it shocked me and got me to appreciate the fact that there are still movies being made that aren't Hollywood.

yeah, got a VHS of this last year and must say I was slightly disappointed. Graphic sex scenes (not erotic) in between boring exposition you can't really understand (not written well and the subtitles don't help).

It's still sitting on my shelf mocking me.

I watched it last weekend. It made me think (again) about the idea that maybe, just maybe, someday someone will make a XXX movie that is actually good enough to win a major hollywood award. This is NOT that movie but serious how cool would that be?! Eyes Wide Shut was the last great hope but didn't have the sex to pull it off. (Don't get started about the story, there's very good one hidden in there and if you haven't seen it, you either were too disappointed in the lack of sex too notice, or haven't studied much of Schnitzler or Freuds works... But seriously lets not go there again) The point is how cool would that be?! Major Stars, Major Story, Major production values, Sex that serves the story...

If we forget the to win a major hollywood award. in the quote above I would suggest Romance X directed by Catherine Breillat (yes a woman). According to IMDB Romance X lost its X in the States has it was cut. So be sure you watch the uncut version.

And yes again the movie is deeply underated on IMDB.

Bloody foreigners who do not understand World cinema ;-)
They should not be allowed to vote.
Just kidding of course.
