View Full Version : How many miss Jet Li as original choice for Seraph?

He passed on the role for The One. Rather than having a bit part in a huge movie, he wanted the starring role in hie own (understandable I suppose).

I figure though even if he accepted a small part it would have allowed him to showcase his talents to a much broader audience and lead to a bevy of other projects. The One was a decidly mixed bag.

Anyone also wish Aaliyah were Link's wife instead of Nona Gaye? A small role also, I suppose, but both these characters will come back in Revolutions.

I did think about these two actors when the alternate ones appeared.

I think that Jet Li would have been nice in Seraph's small role.

I could see the similarities in voice/demeanor in Nona Gaye (as Zee) with Aaliyah.

Don't worry, Jet Li will soon be starring in "2 Good 4 Matrix".

Not me. He made the right choice. You say, "showcase his talents," but it wouldn't. Do you think he would come off as being any better at kung fu than Keanu Reeves? Is that not the ultimate insult to him and his chosen artform? The special effects used in the film would have made his talents obsolete. And not to mention that the role was absurdly stereotypecasted when I think he's trying to move on to a point where he could be considered just a regular guy in a film who knows how to kick ass, rather than nothing more than a kung fu monk.

do miss aaliyah [though nona had a :D -other- :D kinda thang goin on..]

what I am wondering about though...is Oracle. from what I remember reading, she died during filming too and they said her role was essential for Revolutions..did they change the story? or are we going to get a CGI style Oracle?

I would think that the the Mother of the Matrix would be able to take any form that she wants

Didn't miss Jet Li at all. Haven't liked anything he has done lately and actually thought the guy who played Seraph was kinda cool. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the next one. :)

Didn't you listen to Colonel Sanders? He said

"The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect. It was a work of art. Flawless. Sublime. A triumph equalled only by its monumental failure. The inevitablility of its doom as aparent to me now is a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being. Thus I redesigned it... based on your history. To more accurately reflect the varying grotesqueries of your nature. However I was again frustrated by failure. I've since come to understand the answer alluded me because it required a lesser mind or perhaps a mind less bound by the parameters of perfection. Thus the answer was stumbled upon by another... an intuitive program. Initially created to investigate certain aspects of the human psyche. If I am the father of the Matrix... she would undoubtedly be its mother."

Back to the original question, the role is so minor I doubt it would have made much difference if it was Jet Li.

I liked the actor who plays Seraph, personally. I hope we see more of him in Revolutions.

Sorry to keep going off topic

I think Colonel Sanders was just laughing at the name that the Zionists have given her. I mean, if you read the description, it fits her character to a T.

On topic:

We didn't get to see much of Seraph in this one, so I can't really judge how good Jet Li's replacement was. It seems he plays a greater role in the next one, so we will find out soon if Jet Li could have done something with the role. As to his acting, he might be good in non-American work, but in his American work, I always remember his role as The One...

"I am THE ONE! I am no one's beetch!"

IMO, Jet Li can't act his way out of a paper bag.

Chou is a much better actor.

I think Jet Li likes being The One. He can't accept that Keanu's the guy.

Speaking of which, when will we see The One 2?

Miss Jet Li? Nope, but I bet right about now he is kicking himself in the butt for NOT taking this role. I dont think casting him in the role would have been insulting, but a compliment. Hell if he wasnt such a snob he would have made a pretty bad @$$ agent, but since he is a snob he should stick to making DMX videos.

DMX videos pay more then what the brothers offered him. I'm not a big Jet Li fan, but the budget wasn't there to keep li. You can't treat someone well established like that in the industry as some extra. the pay wasn't there and Li walked. smart for him. said that I loved reloaded and I don't think seraph's role would have been more or less different with li in there.

Jet Li's an idiot. He can get his ego out of the way, and get over himself.

Not quite the world-wide star he thinks he is - maybe only big in China. Think about it. Most Americans have no clue who he is. (Redneck number 1, "Is that Jackie Chan?" Redneck #2, "No, I think it's the guy who whooped Mel Gibson's ass in Lethal Weapon?")

Back when these sequels were in developement, his stock was rising fast. But, he's blown it by making crap like "The One", "Romeo Must Die", etc. (I'll admit I liked "Kiss of the Dragon"). It would've been better for him to take a small part (ala Donnie Yen in "Shanghai Knights" and "Blade 2") in the Matrix sequels, vs. starring in pure crap. Just my opinion.

BTW, does anybody know why all martial arts stars are reduced to dumb movies with hip-hop soundtracks? Horrible.

At first I thought it WAS playing the part here. The guy certainly looked kinda like him.

When I first saw the guy sitting there with the glasses on, I immediately thought of Jet Li. I knew he wasn't in the credits, but I figured a cameo or something. It took me almost a minute to ascertain it wasn't him. Maybe I haven't seen enough of his films!

Because marketing "geniuses" seem to think that urban (meaning black) audiences like martial arts movies and hip-hop music. So they continue to combine the two.

I could care less who it was. Maybe in the next movie when that character has an increased role, but in Reloaded it was a negligable scene.

well, anyhow, i think they made a good choice for the casting of seraph. a search in imdb shows that he's had quite a bit of experience in kung-fu movies and it showed. he was quite fluid and i'm not sure how much better jet would have been. plus, his acting (the few lines that he had) was quite a bit better than what i've seen from jet li in his english speaking films.

sweet jacket too...

The guy who did play the role did a fine job with it. And if anything, having Jet Li in the role would be more distracting than anything. While his martial arts skills are great, I wouldn't see Seriph. I'd see Jet Li in the Matrix, and I'd wonder when he was going to fight more. Anyway, he made the right choice. He's already a star...I don't think being in the Matrix would've helped his career that much, nor would it have made the movie any better.

jaeufraser has it exactly right. At best, appearing in the Matrix would've done for Jet's career exactly what Lethal Weapon IV did: Allow him to be the main star in low-medium budget studio films.

I also tend to think he made the right decision at the time. Kiss of the Dragon was a dream project for him in the sense that he got to work with Luc Besson on a Professional-esque film (shame the movie turned out the way it did) and The One was a positive leading role plus a giant, "never worry about money again" pay day (shame the movie turned out the way it did).

And while I may trash those 2 movies, I must admit that each of them has at least one fantastic, near-classic fight scene that I go back to on DVD every once in a while. 3 maybe if you count the eventual Cradle 2 the Grizzave DVD. So that's 3 good action scenes against 1 against a stiff Keanu.

Plus, it's cool that Ngai Sing got the role and will hopefully be put over by it into more stuff.

So basically, I miss Jet in the film because I want to see him in th Matrix, but at the same time I would still want the 3 movies he did as well. If it came down to a choice, I would still rather him choose those 3 other flicks. More joy in the long run.

my friend crazybee had an interview with Collin Chou recently. funny...but he used a couple of questions supplied by yours truly and he answered my questions. lol!

Collin's done a bunch of movies with Jet Li before. i think, according to him, they worked in 4 movies together. he's usually playing the bad guy.

The cast of Seraph was good. I'm glad Jet Li didn't take this role (if that was the one he was offered) - It's hard to believe Keanu fighting Jet Li and have Keanu left standing. While we all know that's not the case. I think, if it was Jet Li - the fighting scene would have been alter.

**POSSIBLE REVOLUTIONS SPOILER**
Did anyone else notice the pic with the title, "Teamwork in Matrix Revolutions?" I didn't notice it on the game preview and I don't remember seeing that in the theatrical trailer.

i just received an email from him.
i'm going to be interviewing him this week. i'm compiling questions from friends and fans right now and use a select few. i'll only use questions that were not asked before.

i have a couple of questions myself. those'll be used for sure.

Well, I don't have any questions, but perhaps you can pass along that this viewer thinks that casting him as Seraph was an excellent choice. I'm interested in seeing some of the other movies that he's been in as a reslut of his role in Reloaded. I think Jet Li, who I like a lot, would have been too cliche here.

so far, i have 11 questions but i have a weird feeling i want to ask more than that..
