Cheapest way to get a basic 5.1 experience?

I noticed that Logitech makes an affordable speaker set called the Z-640s, but what else would I need?

What is the cheapest DVD player that would do the decoding and enable me to get the a surround sound set up from just a DVD player and the logitech speakers?

You need a DVD player, a receiver and speakers - all 3. There are plenty of decently priced ($250-350) Home Theater in a Box sets that can be found at Circuit City, Best Buy or other chains. These aren't optimal, but they're a fine place to start.

Checkout the Denon setup in that thread. Apparently it can be had now for only $249...which is UNREAL for the setup that it is...

to get a real 5.1 experience, goto the theatre. its under $10. you can get away with like $300 or so, but thats not even close to a 5.1 experience, its loud headphones, and there are 5 of them.

haha.

If the sound is coming from 5 different directions, that's good enough for me.

I second the HTIB setup. My parents just got one for $200 from Best Buy and I couldn't believe the sound for the price. They wanted something basic and that's what they got, but for someone on a limited budget or awaiting an opportunity to upgrade, it sounds great.

Hey, if you guys want to toss out a joke its cool but use a or so we can tell. Other wise its just a thread crap and against the rules.

Seach this forum for HTIB and read a bit on entry systems.

C'mon Mr Moderator, this was actually pretty funny! Don't tell me you didn't laugh! Now that's good home theater humor.

I would think that a DVD-ROM drive in your computer, the appropriate card and speakers would be cheaper than any of the alternatives mentioned. Espically since you probably already have the sound card and/or DVD-ROM drive in your computer.
