Note that this personal impression is just based on the Hunt for Red October DVD, as it is the only one I have watched from the set so far.

I personally am not very much in favor of animated menus, as it slows things down. The menus on these discs are rather well done; it doesn't take too long to go from one menu to the other. The sound effects during the transition are always the same however, so that becomes a little boring after a little while.

However! If you want to talk about the quality of the movies, we're on a totally different league. The sound is just awesome. The picture has improved as well, making the total impression of this set very much worth the price. I am sure that all discs are of the same quality, so I consider this set one of the best buys of the year.

I can only speak for C&PD.

I compared my old test demo, the "boom" scene, and the new version DTS track was deeper, louder, and cripser, much better overall.

The video was anamorphic and was cleaner also.

I think that the "Sum of All Fears" in the new set looks MUCH improved from the old transfer.

Seriously, the picture on the first three is noticably better, and hey, they're anamorphic.

People have been raving about the DTS in reviews - I haven't heard them yet on a DTS system so I couldn't tell you. The DD mix is nice, though.

I found HFRO the transfer to be the most improved. Not bothered by that heavy grain and noise that was on the initial release. Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are improvements however the picture seems darker to me? Patriot Games though does show more grain than I thought it would. More than the original releases. Almost like the film element had more wear on it?

Sound.... the DTS is a noticable improvement over the DD! The whole soundstage is a more coherent!

Hope this helps!!

David
