Helmut Berger in The Beast Witha Gun. The movie is medicore and its low budget shows but his scenery chewing performance is great fun to watch. IMHO he raises it above medicore to good.

Vin Diesel in "XXX" would get my pick on this one. The plot is silly and all but I just like the movie for being a kick ass action movie.

Although I loved the movie, Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of NY has been credited everywhere with saving the movie.

Morgan Freeman is the king at saving mediocre movies (High Crimes, Deep Impact, Kiss the Girls, Hard Rain, Along Came a Spider) in my book, though he finally failed with Dreamcatcher.

Another vote for Daniel Day-Lewis in GONY. While not exactly able to save movies, anytime Christopher Walken makes an appearance he pretty much elevates it to another level for the time he is on screen (even Meet Joe Dirt).

The obvious answer is Denzel Washington in Training Day.

Sidney Poitier in Shoot to Kill. Average action flick, but Poitier's charisma and performance really elevate it.

Honk!

Matthew McConaughey in Reign Of Fire. He completely upstaged the dragons and I don't think I would've enjoyed the movie without him.

Very true. I'd also add American History X.

I think Lawrence Fishburn turned The Matrix into a better film. Most other actors in his situation might have overpowered Keanu Reeves, but he played Morpheus with great restraint and let Keanu react more naturally.

(Of course, only as naturally as 'woah' allows...)

Another vote for American History X. That movie is incredible, one of my favorites of all time, but without Norton, I doubt it'd even be average.

This is true to the point that if I see Morgan Freeman's name in the credits of a to-be-released film, I second guess whether I want to ever see it.

Freeman's name is synonymous with mediocre film, IMO.

But grunter, don't forget - Morgan Freeman made the mediocre Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves a much better film. Or was it Alan Rickman who made it better? I can't remember...

I dont consider Street Smarts, Driving Miss Daisy, Seven or the Shawshank Redemption mediocre films.
