Dan O'Bannon talks "Return of the Living Dead" sequels

Hey folks, I spoke with "Return of the Living Dead" writer/director Dan O'Bannon over the weekend. We discussed a few things and one of them was the upcoming sequels.

Dan said they're (the producers) very happy with the scripts that have been written but that Tobe Hooper has not signed on yet to direct, apparently Hooper isn't sure if this deal is "for real."

I mentioned the lack of enthusiasm over Hooper's possible involvement but Dan seems to feel that Hooper has begun to learn how to not mess up his (Hooper's) films (like "Lifeforce", which O'Bannon wrote.) Dan thinks Tobe can do it.

He said the reasons why the sequels that have already been made failed is because they tried to imitate him and "nobody can imitate me but me." He thinks that if they're gonna make sequels, they should try to do something different with the material instead of mining his work.

Dan also mentioned he has spoken with producer Tom Fox (who owns the rights) and said that he offered him his services as an actor (if anybody has forgot, Dan starred in John Carpenter's debut "Dark Star") because fans would like to see him involved in some way. Fox seems to think otherwise. Who wouldn't wanna see the man resposible for *creating* this universe back? Of course, I'd rather see him directing the sequel(s) but hey...

Check out my ROTLD web site at http://members.tripod.com/~evilbaby/ROTLD.html then go to the news section to find out how you can let Tom Fox know that you'd like to see Dan involved with the sequels.

In other news, Dan has recently contributed new interviews and recorded a commentary track for the upcoming 9 disc "Alien" box set. He also turned over his original screenplay as well as numerous photos and artwork for FOX to use in the set.

Dan is currently at work on a book about screenwriting (so look out for it) and is negotiating a deal to write a script for a new movie (which he did not name.)

Finally, with Warner Brothers announcing that "Return of the Living Dead 2" is coming to DVD in 2004, I spoke with one of it's stars, James Karen, this weekend as well. He again confirmed that he'd love to particpate with the DVD so I have passed along info to Warner and hope to hook him (and Thom Mathews hopefully) up with Warner so something interesting can be added to the DVD.
