One and Only Tribeca Film Festival Thread (May 3 - 11)
Anyone else seeing any movies at the Tribeca Film Festival? Currently the only way to buy tickets is with your American Express Card by phone or at www.tribecafilmfestival.org. I put an order in Monday night to see.
SHAOLIN SOCCER - Hong Kong's king of comedy directed, cowrote, and stars in this frenetic spoof about kung fu masters who take the soccer world by storm. Chow did his own translation and was joined by female voice lead Bai Ling (also in Festival selection Paris), resulting in another layer of hilarity in a film that will already leave you aching from laughter. It's one of China's biggest-ever box office hits for a reason. A Miramax Films release.
28 DAYS LATER - What happens when the director of Trainspotting makes an honest-to-goodness horror movie? You get a post-apocalyptic adrenaline rush that's part George Romero's The Crazies and part Stephen King's The Stand. A young man wakes from a coma to find the world has been decimated by a virus that turns people into crazed killing machines. It's already a hit in the U.K., where it's been called the best British horror film in decades. A Fox Searchlight release.
THE LOOK - Who's got the look? Hundreds of young hopefuls show up at an open modeling call to see if it they do. Among them is India Edwards, who has just run away from her mega-mogul father and is looking to start over. Landing a $50,000 modeling contract would help, but first she needs to learn how to model-and confront her father on her terms. Great kitschy fun and a spirited look at a profession with plenty of room for dreamers.
PARIS - A young detective (Chad Allen) tries to escape his past in the company of his dead partner's girlfriend (Bai Ling), who in turn wants to escape the seedy underworld of L.A. and Las Vegas. John Cale's brilliant original score enlivens this gritty modern noir, which casts light on the little-remarked skin trade entrapping Asian immigrants in many of America's big cities.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA - Butchered when first released in the U.S., the full-length version of Leone's final work as a director reveals at last its full power. Warner Bros. Home Video has struck a new copy prior to releasing it on DVD, and it's a rare opportunity to see this great work as it was intended: uncut, and on the big screen. Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, and Tuesday Weld head a brilliant cast in a film that transcends the gangster genre.

"A Tribute to Stan Brakhage" looks interesting.
