John Sandford's "Prey" series
Hi all, I'm currently reading Sandford's Rules of Prey. The first in the Prey series, my first Sandford novel and my first introduction to Minneapolis Lt. Lucas Davenport.
I am thoroughly enjoying this novel and am eager to read the rest - all 14 of them.
For the Prey fans here, does the series get better or worse as the novels keep coming out? Also, what are your favorites?
Happy reading.

If you love the series (which I do) they are all very enjoyable to read. Winter Prey is still my all time favorite and I've read that one several times. My least favorite was Chosen Prey. The villian was very lame in my opinion.
I thought the series was at its best in the middle. Eyes of Prey through Night Prey were my favorites.
Hope you enjoy the series.

I agree; they're all good. I haven't read them in order, so certain things that occurred in later ones referred to previous novels [but NOT enough to require reading them in order; kind of like the Star Wars movies: 4, 5, and 6 were quite enjoyable without having seen 1 + 2, but 1 + 2 flesh out some of what happened in 4, 5, 6.]
One of the ones that is most memorable for me is Eyes of Prey, simply because of the villain. Rules of Prey was also very good, and yes, Chosen wasn't my favorite. Silent Prey is another favorite, and Sudden Prey good, but seemed kind of 'empty' after finishing it. But Sandford is definitely one of those authors that I'll grab anything by--I haven't had a bad one yet.

It's a terrific series. I really like these books.
Sandford maintains quality throughout. Far as I can recall, only one of the books wasn't excellent.

I made an error and read Easy Prey as my first Sanford book. I thought it was awful.
but folks here have convinced me to try again and go in order, so I, too, have Rules.. sitting on my to read pile.

I can confirm that Easy Prey is definitely the worst. I found all the other books to be wonderful.
And what the hell were you thinking, starting a series in the middle?!

I am another Prey fan. Unfortunately, I've only read 5 or so of the books and never in any order.
I eventually picking them all up and starting from the beginning.

He keeps his women for as long as neccessary IMO. No one gets laid more than Lucas! I see according to his website Naked Prey, his latest book, will be out May 12th. It's amazing how many titles can be made from the word Prey that sound cool! I've read them all and they are mostly good. I favor his early to mid stuff more than his latest books, but even his weaker books are worth the time.

Picked up a 1st edition HC copy of Eyes of Prey over the weekend for $2 at a thrift store.
Can't read it yet since I haven't read Shadow Prey.

All Sandford fans...just a heads-up...
I went to a reading last night and he told the crowd that there are going to be at least two more Prey novels after Naked Prey and another Kidd novel coming out this October.

John Sandford is the pen name of John Camp. He has also written three novels under this name. The first two are The Empress File and The Fool's Run. Both are very good. They are about a burglar and artist/computer hacker who freelance their skills.

One was made into a made for TV movie, but which one they did it on escapes me. However they chose Eriq LaSalle formerly of ER to play Davenport, which I didn't see at all. Pretty forgettable.

That would be Mind Prey and it was just not right. Eriq LaSalle as Lucas Davenport was a prime example of terrible casting.
I am happy to hear that we will continue to see more Prey novels in the near future.

Rather than starting a new thread, I thought i'd resurrect this one....I've just rediscovered this series (i read the first three a copule of years ago and life stepped in ) and am about to start Winter Prey - glad to see so many speak highly of it here....I was curious about Sandford's other books though. How do they measure up?
