Oh the humility of it all!
I went yesterday to my local vid store, I goto the shelf to pick up a copy of Ghost Ship only they have none. So I goto the counter and ask if there are any return copies yet. Lady hands me one after looking and checks me out. I get home to watch it and find out its in FULL SCREEN. I should have checked it out before I rented it. There used to be a time when everything was widescreen or double sided for either wide or full screen. I hate consumer ignorance.

You're preaching to the choir on this one brother. My Blockbuster also only has FullFrame if there is a choice. The last time I went to rent something there was Scooby Doo and they had zero WS. I figure any movie worth spending $5 to rent, is worth spending $15 (or less) to buy.
Except maybe Scooby Doo

Don't worry. It happens to me too. But, fortunately, only once.
Besides full screen, I've rented bootleg by accident once (I live in Asia, the paradise of bootlegs). I returned them right away.

Its not like you bought it. Just watch it and return it like any other DVD. No point in complaining to the store about renting FS. Your neighbors arn't laughing at you because you watched a FS movie.

I rented the only version of 8 Legged Freaks which was only full screen. I was disappointed and was surprised that this store carried it in that format only. Funny movie (the spiders have vocal cords...even when they're at their normal state.) but it didn't take advantage of my wide screen set.

Thank God there's Netflix... that and the fact that I sold my car so I can't do my weekly block buster run any more. Watching FS is like sitting in front of the TV on weekends watching old movie marathons.

I bought a used copy of Silence of the Lambs at BB for $8, got home watched it and D'oh! Full Screen. Forgot that there were two releases for that one. Took it back. It just isn't acceptable for a modern classic like that. They didn't have any WS.

Full Frame before 1953 and some of today
I own a great numbe f concerts that are not wide screen, as much as I like wide their are some movie your going to miss if you have it fully against wide screen
The Day The Earth Stood Still, Them, Laura before the year is out, Mark of Zorro 1941, Night Hawks, The Body Guard,
Fleetwood Mac 'The Dance" and a lot of other concerts are Industry Standard or Full Frame and I bought them 'knowing' their format, I didn't cry in my beer.
You only 'rented' one and your crying foul, your going to miss some big titles because of your only FF dedication. I have THEM 1954 made 1 year after Cinema Scope in "The Robe" which started wide screen movies. 76 minute Rodan made in color 2 years after Black and White Godzilla in 1954 but both in industry standard FF.
