Deniro's "The Mission"

This thread will probably get moved but, this new 2-disc SE of Deniro's "The Mission" has me perplexed.

I've never heard of, much less seen this film. So my question is what's the film about and would it be a good blind buy?

My genre interests include historical period pieces, so this film would fit my fancy.

It is a good movie.
In a nutshell, it is the story about missionaries in Latin America.

The score by Ennio Morricone is great, as well as the cinematography by Chris Menges.
It won many awards, including the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival, and one oscar and two golden globes.

Check it out on http://us.imdb.com/Title?0091530

I'll be buying it.

This is one of my favorite films.

Good Cast
Robert Deniro
Jeremy Irons
Liam Neeson
Aidan Quinn

Great Score.

Amazing there aren't any threads buzzing about this film.

I think it's a great film, about a subject not often addressed in movies. I've actually seen it the first time in my high school history class =) Planning on buying the SE.

This is my favorite film...

The scene where
Spoiler:
the native boy cuts the rope tying the armor to DeNiro where DeNiro breaks into a spasm of joy/sorrow
is exceptional.

It's a good blind buy if you like historical and/or religious films.

If you like this check out Romero with Raul Julia.

This is my favorite drama ever of all time.

Ever.

Of.

All.

Time.

Brilliantly acted, gorgeously shot on location, and exquisitely scored. It is a story about slavery, guilt, grace, redemption, war, and sacrifice, set against the backdrop of colonial imperialism in South America.

It is the kind of movie that I think could actually change someone's life.

My full review will be coming out here on April 29... but I'll let you guys get a little preview of one thing from it: the transfer is absolutely, positively STUNNING.

And yes, it's an excellent film! It's a great drama on its own merits, and if you like historical films, you'll definitely like it.

I'm completely astounded that this thread has gone this far without a single mention of the film's director, Roland Joffe. Wow. Guess winning the Palme d'Or doesn't rate much these days...

i saw this movie in spanish class (and yes, dubbed in spanish so i cant say if the linesa re that good or intense in english). however, as a missionary and a catholic, i found it extremely intense and powerful. there are so many scenes with such powerful symbolism in there. my fav one is the whole scene listed above in spoilers....
Spoiler:
the carrying of the burden up the mountain can represent the burden Jesus carried for us when He accepted the sins of the world OR the burden of deniro's sins and the struggle he has to carry then around with him. there are a ton more things it can represent, esp to you and according to your belief systems. the whole movie i like that--filled with things that can make you wonder and interpret them in many ways. it isnt one you just watch to watch and then forget about. it is a great movie for discussion afterwards.
