Extended warranties a good idea?
I was thinking they might actually be a good thing. Let me explain.
Suppose you buy a PS2 now for $200, and an extended warranty plan for $30. The warranty lasts 2 years. So 2 years later, chances are the PS2 will price drop to $99. Now you can mail in your ps2(you can return it for almost any reason), and get $200 cash voucher for it. With the $200, you can get a brand new PS2, and you still have $100 left to spend.
Sounds good to me.

You won't get a cash voucher, you get a new PS2.

It's actually a replacement guarantee and you get a store voucher for the amount you pay minus tax. At least that's the way it works at CC and BB. But at BB, you can also take it into the store and exchange it with another without having to mail it in, but you don't get the difference back.
You would also have to do something to the system, as long as it doesn't look neglected, to use the replacement guarantee. The company will check to make sure there is something wrong with it.
This would actually be good with the PS2 as it seems to have difficulty reading DVDs after a time.

true, i bought my ps2 at BB when it was $300 w/ an extended warranty. then my ps2 had some problems and i took it in and they just gave me $300 store credit and ps2 had already dropped to $200. so i walked out with a new ps2 and paid $100 for an xbox.

Strange, both CC and BB informed me it would be a store or gift card voucher that way they make sure you spend the money there again. If you get a cash voucher, wouldn't you be able to cash it out?

Lately, I've been purchasing the extended warranties on any new console. I'm going to try and make sure I take advantage of it before the two years are up.

i bought a ps2 when it was $300. mine broke about a month ago and i sent it in and got a voucher for $300 plus tax so i purchased a new ps2, another warranty, nascar thunder 2003, a dvd, and still had $11 left over which they gave me a gift card for.
i'm glad i bought my original extended warranty and would recommend it...its better to be safe than sorry

I don't quite understand this thread. If you are intentionally breaking or faking that your product is broken near the end of the extended warranty period, then does there even need to be a discussion of whether buying the warranty is worth it?
If something is guaranteed to happen, should I bet on it? Hmm... really tough question there.
