The Lord of the Rings and other myths

Looking at current events anyone notice how much parallels to our lives these stories have and how some things never change? I also like how Tolkien never put a face on Sauron and instead had the mouth of Sauron speak for him in ROTK. Just like evil is always the same no matter what face you put on it. Milosevic, Hitler, Saddam, bin laden are all evil at the core no matter what face they present to the world.

And we never seem to get rid of evil, just defeat it for a while. Every so often it comes back.

Myths and legends are representations of human culture.

I'd expect them to reflect us.

Universality and timeless themes are consciously put in these stories. Everyone can recognize them. That's why they endure.
