Transcending history and the world, a tale of souls and swords eternally retold.
It's been sometime since I've done this so forgive in advance if it sucks. . Today I got to play The GameCube version of SC 2. I realize that this version will probably be the most sought after due to its company specific character Link, but it might also be the most ignored due to the controller. It's no Dreamcast controller, but after about 20 minutes of play I adjusted to the GC controller, of course it cost me a few wins but who's counting? Heres the button layout..B - Gaurd A - Horizontal attack Y - Veritcal attack X Kick. Z- Soul Charge L, R gaurd. C stick = nothing. Graphicly this game is on par with the arcade version. Namco did a wonderful job porting over every voice, and detail from the arcade to home. Speaking of voices everyone in this game speaks Japanese unlike the arcade version where they speak english. The announcer speaks in english so I guess its not EVERY voice. When comparing this to the other two versions (XBox, PS2) the only differences (at least that I noticed) are the use of textures on the floors of arenas, and on certain characters. Just about every menu is in english so you wont have trouble picking what mode your about to play. The only time language becomes an issue is during weapon master mode. Much like the mission battles in Soul Calibur (DC) you need to meet certain criteria in order to beat your opponent. Fear not though thats what www.gamefaqs.com is for.
Now I know what your asking yourself now 'that's great zero but what about LINK!!??"
Link was the one character I was really worried about, namely because I wasnt sure how Namco would make him fight. Well if you love Smash Bros. then forget everything you learned there because Namco took Link and made him a very formidable foe. Yes he has his bombs, boomerang, and bow. However using them in a fight is not as useful as you'd think. The bomb can be tossed onto the ground and blast your enemy out of the ring, or simply sky high waiting to be juggled. The bow, and arrow however is used as part of an air juggle, or to be used from long distance. The boomerang feels as if it was thrown in there just because. I only got to play this for an hour so there may be something I'm missing. But on the whole Link is a great addition to the Soul Calibur 2 roster. Which by the way has 5 empty slots. One of those slots Ive been told is for Sophitia. The rest? Well I'll have to wait for my copy to come in before I can answer that question.
Necird is another character Im 1) Annoyed with and 2) Determined to learn. It had been mentioned before that he has everyone's weapon, but what wasnt made clear is that he can use any of those weapons at any given time. They pop out at random all depending on how your attacking. Strange no?
Thats about it for now, I'll have to post more of my impressions once my copy comes in, should be by Friday. Until then my fellow hardcore, laters.

Wow...PS2...Even though the graphics arn't as good as Gamecube, and the extra character sucks, it still sold better. Man, Japan is screwed up.

Same goes with the X-Box version unless you play it in 720p
