good game picked it up for relatively cheap (BB had it on sale for 35 bux)...haven't had too much time to play lately, but so far the game seems pretty open ended. There are certain missions which continue the story line (those are opened up as you gain levels, you gain levels by earning X number of $$$), but those can be ignored i'm assuming indefinately. You can then sign up for missions posted on job boards which range from blowin stuff up to delivering cargo. Simple but for me at least it works, make money to buy bigger badder ships and guns then go blow some stuff up.

FYI---i'm about 12 hours in and the game is fairly linear....ie you can't level up unless you pass some of the main storyline missions.....also...you're sometimes isolated to particular galaxies b/c of the plot involved....apparently it will all open up after you finish the main game....overall, the graphics and ambiance is pretty cool but the combat does get a little repetitive

I got it a few weeks ago pre-owned. I had avoided it and starlancer due to them taking out joystick control.
I must say that I was wrong to do so. Although I still prefer joystick for flight and mecha sims, the control setup for Freelancer works well. Some of the voice acting when in the bars looking for rumors is pretty sad, but so far into the game (just installed it last night) it is fun
plus
George Takei and John Rhys-Davies are in it
and that guy from 90210, Ian Ziering

the plot dialog is good, but the "rumor/mission/information" stuff is horrible
"I work for ______ we run this place"
Anyone try any mods for it?
I saw a readme for one that looks like it made some good changes, but the site it was on didn't have it for download due to bandwidth limits being reached
