This has always bothered and puzzled me...If I am not mistaken, Windows based computers make up the vast majority of computers out there, however in the movies and tv, everybody has a mac. Why??

I never really paid any attention to what kind of computers they are using in movies (kind of too detail orientated if you ask me), but if they do truly use Macs, would accurately reflect my professional life so far. Every place I have ever worked, much to my pain and frustration, has always used Macs.

The Mac is the only computer platform able to network directly with alien spaceship mainframes without installing any additional drivers.

It's product placement, I'm sure.
Plus, hate them if you want to, they tend to look a little more "futuristic" than the ol' beige box.

Product placement. Mac pays for that moment in the spot light.
Also, PC might be everywhere in the world, but in the film industry, apple computers are the backbone of just about all post house systems. so they are an industry basic for film and television, that partnership and relationship may also be another reason why they are in the spot light a lot.

I think its funny... you can take this a bit further and say taht all the good guys are using Macs and the bad guys are using PCs (except for Unbreakable).
But the funniest thing is when they have a windows machine and the operating system is a Mac OS... like in You've Got Mail, Meg Ryan has a Powerbook and Tom Hanks has a PC Laptop, but they are both running the same OS... OS 8.5!... and no, there isn't Mac emulation software for the PC.
But then again, sometimes when you see a Mac on TV they have the Apple symbol covered up... like on Friends. They think its cool, but don't wanna pay the price.

But the main reason I think has to do with Mac's marketing budget and strategy. They have a niche market and focus more on style than substance, a perfect fit for the Hollywood films...

I've wondered the same thing for a long time.
As for Macs looking cooler, I'd have to disagree. There is so much variety and customizability with PC cases that everyone should be able to find the right case for them, with Macs you are stuck with one case to choose from.

Macs look cooler, now, but just a few years ago they looked just like PCs, but you still saw Macs in movies more than PCs. It's just Apple's marketing strategy, they pay more to have their product used, so it's used.
I think it's funny when some movies will have the same STYLE of Mac use through out. MOst recent example I can think of is How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Every office they showed had the new iMacs. Every desk in every office in every building have the same iMac. They could have atleast varied the computer they used some!

I read a story a few years ago when the first iMacs came out that Macintosh was campaigning aggresively to have their products appear in television and movies. I think some of it was definetely product placement, but a lot of it was just because iMacs were so "hip" at the time.
