ARGH! Bugs. There're bugs near my books

Okay, so I'm an avid reader and book collector. Modern first edition hardcovers.

For the last month or so, I've occassionally spotted a tiny (about the size of the tip of a pencil) red bug crawling on the outside of whichever book I was reading. The bug is so small, only a book collector would see it.

I saw one three different times. Each time I've seen them downstairs. My bookcase is upstairs, luckily.

Last night, however, I found three of them bugs. Two on one book, another on a paperback. Now I'm worried.

What do I do? Should I worry? The last thing I want to do is have bugs eating my books or nesting in the dark corners of my bookcases. Then again, I'm not sure I want/need to fumigate either.

Ideas?

I'd suggest calling your local library. Perhaps they use a terminator experienced in dealing with book bugs, and could point you his way.

Seems like kind of an extreme measure to take care of some little bugs.

Call the entemology department of the local university, or even the agricultural extension. Have one of the bugs ready so you can answer questions about it. They can tell you if you need to be worried. You're probably fine so long as they aren't living (and pooping) on top of your books.

Just to get you in the mood, I once had to throw out a whole bookcase full of books at a bookstore I was working at because it was infested with termites. True story.

Whoops, I *think* I meant exterminator. Although Ah-nold would dispatch those bugs pretty quickly.

Bugs have been my biggest fear, too. I check out my books every once in a while to see if I can find any, but I've been lucky so far. Just a rare silverfish.

I'll occasionally see a silverfish around my house. I dispatch the little bastards immediately.

I hate those little silverfish. I used to have tons in my first apartment 5 years ago. Not sure why the exterminator couldn't get rid of them.
