First let me begin Carpenter is one of my favorite Directors! I thought this was kind of strange Last saturday night the Sci-Fi Channel had this movie on at 11:00 pm eastern. Now I own This movie on LaserDisc and Dvd Had the VHS as well. This television version was edited very different and there were scene's that I never seen, Like almost an entirely different film. I've done some reasearch and theres no info on a different cut. Its Strange because this version changed the movie in a way like it was all a dream sequence, Which when compared to my owned versions the story was linear and straight forward. So if anybody know this version or where its attainable please say. All comments Welcome-

Perhaps if you described the scene...?

Use spoiler tags if you feel it appropriate.

From IMDb's Alternate Versions: (http://us.imdb.com/AlternateVersions?0093777)

Television version is slightly reedited, suggesting that all that takes place in the film is just a dream that Jameson Parker's having:
-after the opening credits there a new shot showing Parker's house from the outside (the theatrical version opens with a shot of Parker trying to perform a card trick).
-at the beginning, after Parker watches on TV a program reporting the discovery of a new supernova, the narration goes on talking about the death of a millionaire and the discovery of a religious book in his library
-all mentions of the dead priest, member of the Brotherhood of Sleep who took care of the church where the evil liquid is kept hidden, are deleted;
-during the whole film, there are new inserted sequences showing Parker sleeping/dreaming in his bed

That's terrible. I wonder how Carpenter feels about this?

Interesting post, I actually was watching this as well and noticed it was different.! Now is the TV version available? And thanks for not including spoilers I hate that. So would John Carpenter actually redit the film this way, Or was this done by the studio?

It is interesting that these scenes exist. Maybe JC had an idea for a different take on the movie and ditched it?

This is rather interesting....

For whatever reason, radical re-editing seems to be common with several of JC's films, without his approval for the most part. There's a *very* different version of Halloween II that pops up on cable from time to time and of course, there's the utter outrage of a re-edit that CBS did on The Thing for it's network premiere a few years back. Then there's the TV version of the original Halloween(all the extra young Michael Myers scenes in the hospital), but that was done by and with JC's understanding. This is the first I've heard of Prince of Darkness being taken apart(?) though.

***Potential Spoilers***

I saw this film probably 12 years ago. And I saw it on TV.

I don't remember much of the movie, but I do remember the ending because it had a BIG impact.

In the movie the lead male character is terrorized by the devil who takes the form of his girlfriend (I think)

All I know is that at the VERY END the male lead WAKES UP and it's "all a dream". He's snug in his bed...but then he roles over and BANG! The devil/girlfriend/demon thing IS IN BED WITH HIM. (This was a very big jump scare and I crapped my pants). The jolt of this scare causes the lead guy to wake up again (that is, the devil in bed w/ him was also a dream). Now he is alone in his bed. He gets up and approches the full length mirror in his bedroom (mirrors were some kind of doorway in the movie I recall) and reaches out to touch the mirror. There is great suspense as to what will happen when he touches it. And just as he does touch it....the credits role...THE END.

Is this NOT the original ending? What did I see?

That *is* the original ending, as far as I know. That's the same ending I saw in the theater when it was still running.

BTW, I love that ending :)

More importantly what were the edits to the thing on TV?

I haven't seen it since it's CBS broadcast years ago but the CBS version had obvious cuts at points of extreme effects and language. I seem to recall shots of Kurt Russell's character looking placidly at something right in the middle of the Norris and Palmer scenes to avoid the worst of the effects. There was also this bizarre scene tacked onto the end of the CBS version with shots of one of the camp's dogs running away from camp with Donald Moffett doing a "Watch the skies!" voiceover, completely cutting out Carpenter's wonderful nihlistic ending. Truly weird stuff.

no, you may be confusing vague memories of the trailer where the title comes crashing out from the mirror.
