About those little tiny LCD TV's

You know, the 13-20" flat panel LCD ones they put in the front of the store, like the Sharp Aquos. My question is, what is so special about these? They look just like the flat panel computer monitors, but they cost 3x as much.

Is it just a higher quality? Is that the cost of putting a tuner in? Can they just charge whatever they want since it's a different market? Or is there some big difference that I'm completely missing?

I have a computer with a TV tuner (with recording capability) and a 19" LCD display. I don't think the whole thing cost what they're selling those displays for. But I have to know how to operate the computer. People who buy the ones you see don't.

Aside from the obvious differences like the tv tuner, comb filter, speakers, and inputs available, the Sharp Aquos offer brighter displays and higher contrast than many pc monitors. Brightness for the Aquos runs about 430 cd/m2; contrast 500:1. Using Apple’s 17in LCD as a comparison, brightness is 200 cd/m2 with a contrast of 350:1.

My 19" LCD monitor is 250 CD/m˛; 500:1 contrast.
